VA Hiring Process

Published

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

I would love to even get to that point lol

Finally got my official offer; Nurse I, Level II, Step 3 (new grad, finished my BSN in May)

Wow, I'm a BSN with 3 years of experience and didn't get step 3.

Hi everyone! I interviewed last Tuesday at my local VA, received a tentative offer yesterday. Also received and finished my VetPro yesterday and my e-Qip today. My physical/fingerprinting is scheduled for next Tuesday. Apparently they've already called my reference list I had submitted with my application the day after my interview.

So I feel like this is going pretty quick compared to what I've read on here! Wasn't expecting that at all, thought it would be a long, drawn out process! Anyone else have this experience? I'm wondering if I'll be starting before the end of the year?

I'm guessing the actual background check would take the longest? I've only been a nurse for about 5 months, have only had a nursing job for 2 months and my prior job was for almost 10 years in fast food, so I expect it to be easy to verify everything!

So excited, can't wait to hear back and get a firm offer!

Nothing really new here. Last week a couple of my references received a form to fill out and they both sent it back. However, there are several other references who as far as I know haven't been contacted yet. I suspect the shutdown delayed the background check some. It's going on 3 months since I started the whole process. Not a long time, I know; I'm just impatient.

All in all DEPENDING who is your HR contact and the govt feelings that day, it can take MONTHS. From the time offered a position it took 4 mos, and that was me calling every week the last 4 since they were always loosing papers, or we need this or.....ect

PS your orientation/probation is 2 years long no matter how many years you are a RN

Is it possible to receive a firm offer if you're still waiting on reference papers for Vetpro? I've done my physical & fingerprinting 2 days ago & filled out E-qip. Everything else of mine is verified except 2 of my reference/peer reviews...

yes I was given a firm offer, then it had to go to vetpro then it had to be beforea board review and then signed off. That took the LONGEST. Months.......

How did everyone receive their firm offer (e.g. email, snail mail)? I spoke with the HR guy at the end of October and he told me that my start date would be December 2nd since I had to give 2 weeks notice to my current employer. Well it's going on the 2nd week of November & I still don't firm offer...I don't know what my pay rate is? where to show up? More importantly I want to have the firm offer in writing before I give 2 weeks notice to my current employer.

I got mine via email but it did take forever. The salary came beforehand in an email telling me the HR person got my salary from the board. Then a few weeks to tell me all was in order. The a few more weeks to get the offer letter via email, confirming the position with salary confirmed and where to show up, etc. I would email or call your HR person and ask.

Update: I got my offer via snail mail today. I got a $2+ raise from my current hourly rate. Can't wait to start!!!
