VA Hiring Process

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

Well I was hired 2 days after the interview but didn't start until 2 months later. The pay is very competitive.... I make more than I would at Vanderbilt or the other hospitals n TN

Hello! I got a interview 10/2012 early in the month at the VA.

I called the person I interviewed with today, (2 weeks later.)

The manager said that they had no info for me and said all candidates will be contacted by HR.

Should I call HR? They never had a contact name listed for the HR just the general info.

Should I wait? Does it matter? How long until I know?

How long did you wait until they phoned with the offer?

Thanks for your help!

I had an interview today at the VA here in Birmingham, al. I was so nervous. The nurse manager tol ne she could tell that I was nervous but she said not to worry about it. Now the waiting process, how long does it usually take for them to call you an let you know if you was selected.

I am in the same boat! Different location!

I just hope b/c I am a bedside volunteer that they like me!

Hello Nursequilt; one of us in our family has a tentative job offer at the Dallas VA as a Health care professional; completed Vetpro, waiting for the call/email to get the Physicals and obviously If everything goes fine; we would be moving to the Dallas area from a different state; but I'm hearing from many of them in this forum that it is a lengthy hiring process; By the way good luck to all of them.

I wanted to see - if you can help answer the following - as i understand from these forums each VA Hospital unit has a somewhat different hiring / on-boarding process and time varies -

1) Have you started working at Dallas VA?

2) Are you local to Dallas / North TX, does it take more time for the out of state candidates?

3) In some other forums related to communities and neighborhoods i have heard people saying VA is in a very bad part of the town?

4) How are the neighborhoods surrounding the VA facility?

5) How easy / difficult it is to get in / out of VA facility through those streets.

6) Are there public transport options to the VA facility?

7) Also, in some other unrelated to this forum, i heard some people who had visited VA Facility complaining about the parking that it is hard to get a parking close by, Is there separate parking spots for employees? How difficult is it to get a parking spot?

Any information on the above is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello Nursequilt; one of us in our family is in the hiring process for a position at the Dallas VA Medical Center with a tentative offer; completed VETPRO, waiting to get an appointment for Physical/Medical, references received verification letters; that's where it stands; It looks like it is a long wait, as i can see many of them in this forum are eagerly waiting for the final word to get started; Good luck to all of them. So if everything goes fine with the hiring process, and get a joining date, we will be moving to Dallas from a different state; I wanted to see if you can share your experience with the hiring process that you have been through with Dallas VA and be able help with any information on the following questions -

1) In your post you stated you are waiting for the section chief to sign off, that was back in march, i believe by now you should have been employed with VA? What was the total timeframe from the time you were received the conditional offer until the date of joining?

2) In some other forums related to communities and neighborhoods, i heard many of them saying that Dallas VA facility is in a very bad neighborhood?

3) How safe are the neighborhoods surrounding VA?

4) How safe/bad it is driving into the VA facility through those neighborhoods?

5) Any public transportation options to get to VA facility?

6) Unrelated to this, i came across reading in some other blogs/forums that people visiting VA facility complaining about parking that it is hard to find a parking close by; how about employees parking, do they have separate parking for employees?

I really appreciate if you share any information on the above.

Thanks.

This thread has been helpful to me for my journey to work at the VA Dallas. I interviewed 3/8 and received tentative offer 3/13. Two days later my physical was scheduled and I had completed VetPro. My supervisor references received their packets at work address and my HR department would not allow them to complete. My HR department completed their packets. One arrived to the VA and one did not. My third reference did not return the packet. I completed my physical and was finger printed and completed EQIP all same day. I completed my Board Package and returned by 3/28. Whew. I had three more references for this package. It seems that when I was not at work, I was working on the board package so that I could get the highest salary offer possible. I received salary offer and was boarded as a Nurse I, Level 3, Step 14 (I currently have associates degree). In order to accept the position I will be taking a deep salary cut, but should be able to recoup in a couple of years. I had to provide one more supervisor reference, which I hand carried to HR today. When I arrived with my reference, I was told by my VetPro person that the college I attended could not verify my degree because of a problem with a computer merge several years ago. I had to take my diploma to the college to prove I had graduated with my degree. Whew! This was today. I was notified by email later today that my package has been sent to the Section Chief for signature. I think that when the Section Chief signs off on my packet, I will receive a Firm offer of employment and can set a start date. What a ride.

SO if one is rejected for a position at the VA does one get a rejection letter? Does ANYONE know?

I am going on 3 weeks since interview. The person who interviewed me says that she does not have any information for me.

This person says I will hear from HR. Does anyone know?

My husband received his packed in the mail on Oct. 10th. He was told to contact the person that sent the packed immediately and a letter was enclosd stating they wanted to packet back in 5-7 days.

My husband called the very next day but did not hear back until Oct. 17th. He then stated to work on the reference letters which was the most difficult. He finally got all of his letters and mailed the packet in on Nov 5th.

He has tried contacting ther same person twice to find out if she received anything and she has not returned his messages

He heard from a nurse recruiter on Nov. 13th who had a few questions and then told my husband that he just has to wait to hear from them again.

I am hoping this process is over soon and he will be able to start in January.
