UW BSN vs. SU BSN

Published

i feel very lucky and humbled to have been accepted into the uw bsn program and the su bsn program. i now am trying to figure out which school to go to. has anyone been through either one of these programs? if so what was your experience like, and did you feel prepared as a nurse when you graduated? any advice or information would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

I have heard that SU's curriculum is such that you don't have a med/surg clinical complete until well into junior year.. which can delay opportunities for nurse tech positions for your junior/senior year summer work experience as UW you are eligible to apply after first quarter of nursing so that in January students starting obtaining jobs - those that want to start applying.

Both are great schools.... I think the commute, whether you want to live on or off campus, financial aid, and other ties might be of interest.

I'm kind of partial to UW myself ;)

That's good to know, thanks for the advice! I think I'm definitely leaning towards UW, especially considering cost. I've just heard some stories about UW instructors not caring about their students as much as their research, but I'm not sure if that is really the case or not. Are you a nursing student at UW?

I am. I've been quite happy with everything. That being said there are always areas that can be improved - but I'm not critical of what I see as 'details' and have not felt my learning is impaired by any means... given the ability to choose again I'd make the same choice w/ no regrets.

That's great to hear! Thanks so much!

I am about to graduate from SU with a BSN and I would highly recommend their program. They are in the process of restructuring the clinical layout so that may help with the Nurse Tech situation, although I was a NT the summer after my junior year and I had no problem finding a job. I would ask the SUCON what the clinical/course schedule would be for you if you were to start there. What I think is best about the program are the small class sizes, and the fact that the teachers really go out of their way (for the most part) to make sure they are available and you are doing well. Only negative I can see is that they have high turnover of their clinical faculty and the cost :(

Good luck to you and congrats! If you have any questions about SU, let me know!

Congrats! I will be in SU's BSN, and we just had a short orientation (barely skimming the surface) but they brought up that the curriculum had changed a bit and I think we will be doing Med-surg earlier than previous cohorts. I know theirs used to be later than UW's, but a comment made during the orientation made it sound like there are now earlier opportunities for nurse tech because of a change in when med-surg falls. Good luck in your choices, and if you choose SU I look forward to working with ya! :D
