Good morning:
I am currently a nursing student in Illinois and fell in love with Galveston several years ago. I have been trying to contact someone from the UTMB to ask them about any intern/externships they might offer to students not from the Texas area.
Is the hospital is trying to get up and running since Ike?
Does anyone have another idea on how I can get a hold of someone down there?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't want to discourage you but I must be honest with info. I live on the Island and UTMB is a mess currently. They have just layed off 3000 employees and our shutting the doors on many of its facilities. It will only be a shell of what it used to be before the hurricane. All of this was caused by financial losses that were increased by IKe. I doubt they have any intern programs up and running and wont for a long time. The hospital isnt really fully open currently and only has a :bluecry1:few areas open. Most patients must go off the island for care and critical ones are flown up north by helicopters. The area is overloaded with qualified nurses now due to the layoffs and jobs and internships will be hard to come by probably for the next 2-3 years for the southeast gulf coast area in my opinion.
Thank you for being honest with me Mathwizard. I had heard about the layoffs and that the hospital was hit pretty bad by the hurricane. It was a dream of mine to come down there and work b/c I fell in love with the people and attitude of the island but I guess I will wait and see what the future will hold for me.

meximom,
I have to agree on the UTMB situation. My organization is actively hiring laid off nurses even as we speak.
If you are seeking a 'beach' atmosphere, you may want to look into Corpus Christi. CHRISTUS Spohn (3 campuses in CC) has a very active new grad program. If you're interested, PM me and I can provide you with a contact name.

There are a TON of UTMB folks at the med center hospitals now. I HIGHLY doubt they'd be spending any money on training new people.
