uterine rupture

Published

Hi Everyone, I am hoping there is a l/d nurse here who can help me with a few questions.

1. Is it normal for a mom for contractions to cease immediately after a uterine rupture? if so, why does this happen?

2.What are the IMMEDIATE nursing interventions in a case like this? besides preparing client for immediate c-section? are there any other nursing interventions besides prep for c-section?

Thanks everyone, I love this website!

Hi There,

Have you read about this in your OB nursing textbook? Nursing textbook have lots of information regarding the pathophys and what you as the nurse need to do.

Yes, I have looked in my textbook, it does not have much in-depth information on the subject of uterine rupture. Just an overview. That is why I was asking for info!

Im still a student nurse with another semester to go until boards but I will take a tenative stab at this one

1. I think the ctx stopping has something to do with the ruptured portion of the uterus interrupting the flow of the contractions. The contractions originate at the top of the uterus, the opposite end from the cervix

2. This pt is going to bleed out rapidly, and fetal demise could be eminent as the placental circulation is impeded thus the necessity of an emergency section. However we would try to recirculate blood to vital organs IE heart and brain by elevating the patient's legs.

Any other takers?

This thread is from February of this year so I imagine the member who originally started it already got their answer or has long ago finished their OB rotation.

Uterine contractions stop when the uterus ruptures because the uterine wall which is a muscle has been torn.

Nursing actions include the following:

  • get oxygen started
  • prepare to replace blood and fluids
  • assess for S/S of hemorrhage and shock
  • prepare for surgery
