UTEP PNP CLINICALS

Published

I'm currently a few semesters in to the PNP program at UTEP. My question is for anyone that is already in their clinicals. Do you have a lot of class work to complete while you are getting your clinical hours done or is it primarily just logging patients? Just trying to figure out how overwhelming it may be to try and work and do clinicals.

Thanks,

Amber

First of all, Go Frogs!”; I didn't go there but it's a great school. Pros: flexible program, inexpensive, great professors, extremely supportive of adult learners with families. Cons: a ton of papers (I'm sure it's the same everywhere), having to drive to campus (about 4-5 times over the entire course, so not too bad), getting my own preceptors. I have to take a minute to discuss the preceptor thing. I was an RN in SA for over 20 years; building relationships all over town, and it was a struggle to get preceptors. I was calling in favors with many providers trying to meet the 720-ish hours required for the program. I'm also a member of SANAP.org, and at every meeting we discuss the problem with preceptors. Getting preceptors will hands down be the biggest struggle.

When comparing your options, weigh the preceptor thing heavily. If you're in SA, I can help you a little with finding preceptors. Whatever you decide to do, good luck. Going back to school for FNP was the best career decision I've made. And the future of NP's is getting brighter every day. I love my job.

Also, Congratulations on all of your accomplishments! Great Advice! Thank you! & I loved TCU! I wish they had a FNP program.

I know that finding a preceptor is one of the hardest challenges to FNP programs & more and more schools are making you find your own. This does make me very nervous. & It looks like you did a great job networking!!! I live in Dallas but I am definitely willing to commute if I need to to get my hours completed. I think I may take you up on your offer because I know that I will need some advice and assistance in getting preceptors. Thank You!!

Also, Did you work full time while in the program. Was it challenging taking two classes per semester?

So are you in UTEP - FNP program? even I am in Dallas and not sure if I should go with UTEP or not.

I have heard great reviews about its program

please help

thanks

Hi! I know this post is over a year old, but I just wanted to mention that banking clinical hours is no longer allowed at UTEP. And this is coming directly from Dr. Singh, who heads the FNP program there. I'm not sure why they did away with it. I just started my clinicals this month, and yes...finding preceptors was definitely the biggest challenge for me. I'm all set for Fall semester, but still need to find a Family Medicine preceptor, as well as one for my specialty semester. I'm new to SA, and I'm on the phone all morning trying to get preceptors most days. :( It's definitely a struggle. I wish I had more connections here, that's for sure!
