Has anyone been through this 9 month program? I talked with the director of the program this morning and it sounds pretty good. I just wanted to talk with someone who has actually been in the program.

IS it the AORN periop 101 course? If so, I did that program at a my hospital and loved it. Ours was classroom based but I think they've since gone to self-study web based program. It's a great program that people pay several thousand dollars to attend at universities. The best part is that you not only don't have to pay for the course, they pay you to learn
I'm not sure that it is the same program. After completion of the program you sign a contract agreeing to work for UT medical center for 2 yrs. The class already started for this year. I will have to wait and apply in Jan for the 2009 class. That gives me a little time to check it out.

Not sure which UT you're referring to, but I just started the UT-Southwestern's OR-Internship. I love both campuses, and the staff is great!
I was told by one nurse (from her experience as an intern) for the first 3 months, you feel like an idiot, the second three months, you know what you're doing, but want someone by your side. The next 3 months, you are feeling more confident, and are ready to role by the end of your internship.
Of course, you will never learn everything, and will learn something new probably every day.
I will learn circulating and scrubbing, and have seen and talked to several RNs that do scrub. That was a definite decision maker for me. I wanted to learn both, and they utilize the AORN's recommendation of a 9-month training.
Best of luck wherever you end up. :)
Sorry, I'm referring to the other "UT". The University of TN medical center program. I would love to learn to scrub in and eventually become a RN first assistant. Good luck in your program.
