For anyone currently in the USPHS, how much "say" do you have in where you are placed? I am applying to graduate school currently, but I'm leaning towards the USPHS. I don't mind living in a rural community, but I want to live somewhere where I can extract myself from the community. In other words, I want to help those in need, but I also don't want to be a nurse 24/7. Thanks!

Awandering,
If you go to the USHS website.... check out the link provided for 'available locations/positions' for nurses.. they maintain an up to date listing by agency/position/location... it's pretty cool. When you apply agencies review your app and contact you individually, if they want ya... and you have the option of accepting/rejecting every individual offer. So yes you have a say - as you only go where accepted.
Please be advised.. i'm a lurker and not a USPHS student.. or worker

I crossed from being active duty in the Air Force to USPHS a year ago. With USPHS I had a say so in where I got orders. My Air Force experience was mostly positive, but I did not have a say on my job at my base. I was cleared in each category for USPHS (physical, nursing boards, security clearance) and then I applied for my job. I applied for two different jobs and it turned out they both pursued me as well. In the end I chose where I would accept an assignment. I have no regrets for my decision to cross from active duty Air Force to USPHS.

PHS is really cool as how you basically apply to individual agency's open slots job by job... they individually check you out and if interested can offer you a specific job at a specific location.. you can accept or hope a different agency/location calls you back.. very cool and seems to offer some good experiences especially if you like the rural areas~
