USF applicants 2013

U.S.A. Florida

Anyone applying to USF's (University of South Florida) nursing program?. I feel discouraged because I heard how competitive and rigorous it is.I have a 3.7 GPA. finished about half of my pre-reqs, got A's in all of my science courses. A B in statistics, ethics, and humanities:sarcastic:. I'm currently an ambassador at a community college and volunteering at a hospital. If those aren't good enough to get in the program I don't know what will lol. Is anyone here a USF nursing student? I would love to hear your experiences. I hope I can at least get into USF or my community college. If those fail..then it's off to or technical for me!!

So I had to retake one of my prerequisites. Does anyone know if they take into account your old as well as your new grade? It would be the difference between a 3.9 and a 3.5 :/

As far as I know they look at first attempt grades only but don't worry so much about the GPA you have just as good as a chance of getting in the program. There's been people with 4.0 gpa's turned down because their essay wasn't good enough. Don't give up!

Hello Ladies! Im one semester away from finishing my pre reqs at a community college in miami. My dream school is USF its all I think about and what I work so hard for. My gpa is a 3.50 and I know thats the minimum, but with only 12 more credits Im thinking it will only go up to a 3.55 and thats if I get straight A's. Soooo with that being said. I was wondering what everyones GPA was like when they got accepted ( or if you got accepted as an alternate ). I know the minimum gpa used to be 3.7 and it dropped to 3.5 so If any recent applicants could please let me know :) I would greatly appreciate it because Im gettinf discouraged with such a low GPA.

Hey! I got in with a 3.65 overall GPA and an 3.8 prerequisite GPA. Honestly it's all up from here whether you get in with your GPA or not. There are people with 4.0 GPAs that got turned down for people with 3.5...the major determination of getting into the program is that essay. That's the one that helps you stick out from all the rest. Don't be discouraged and have a back up plan. If you get in it was surely meant to be :). Keep up the good work and good luck on your ventures!!

Do you have any advice on writing the essay? I know that we must have good syntax and speak from the heart, is there anything specific we should keep in mind when writing the essay? How did you write yours.

I only spent two days on mine and got it looked over by someone on this site. Good grammar and speak from the heart. Talk about what made you want to be a nurse and why...you can include experiences and things you've been through. They provide an outline of what they want in the essay...its up to you to make it stand out. I think you should write straight from the heart then have the paper definitely looked over. I'm just blessed that I got in. Good luck !!

First off thank you sooo much for responding cookiecruz! :D sooo people with a 3.5 really got in?! Omgosh that gets my hopes up sooo high lol . You are soooo lucky! How do you like it so far?! USF has been my dream for as long as I can remember! Sooo just make sure I write a good essay, eh? Should I maybe include my struggles as an immigrant when I first came into the country or would that be too much? Lol

I think if it related to nursing I would, but if it doesn't I wouldn't use it. I described my journey to nursing, from where I was at a couple years back to where I am today, and along the course of the paper addressed the points the essay needed to contain.

I have my essay completed, but because its during the Christmas break, no one is available to look over my essay and check for grammatical issues. I showed the essay to my mother, and I felt like she wanted me to make this generic essay, not doing that. Its annoying to wait until mid-January for help on a paper I wrote less than the month before.

Oh totally agreed! Well I guess its a part of the journey in a way because without papers one cant go to university but idk ill have to see. When are you applying for? :)

I want to apply for the accelerated (Summer and Fall) and maybe the traditional too. I want to apply to as many tracks as possible in order to increase my chances. What about you?

@jgab ...I think you should definitely use that you were an immigrant and your struggles in the essay definitely. Just as long as it pertains to your journey of wanting to be a nurse. But it has to relate to whatever topic they give you ...maybe you can use it as an example to show you possess the trait determination. Just make yourself stand out definitely and USF is known for accepting a variety of cultures. The nursing program is great but be prepared to be drained by the end of the week. It's ALOT of work so def set aside some time. It's challenging at first but you get used to it. The first semester is hardest because you're new to everything but you progress and get stronger. If you make it through the first semester you can make it through them all. There are also several hospitals-they assign you to one ...so think of commute lol. But it's great, rewarding, and tiring but worth it :). Any more questions just ask me!!

Do you start to see patients in the first semester? What is that like?
