Can anyone give me a list of the Air Force bases that have hospitals (not just outpatient clinics) here in the US. I am in the process of completing my packet and it is almost time for me to decide where I would like my first duty station to be. My husband would like to go either to Colorado, Florida, or South Carolina, but I told him I want to go where I am going to get the most experience as a new graduate nurse. I realize that I will have to go through NTP first which is 3 to 4 months before I go to my first duty station. I do have a list of hospitals that have the NTP, just need info on the bases that actually have hospitals and not just outpatient clinics. My goal is to eventually get into ICU and then on to CRNA school. Thanks for the help.

i would say he wants you in there in july because the new fiscal year starts october 1. that gives him a little wiggle room to fix any paperwork that needs to be done!!

let me know about your tour of wright-patt and what you think!! if you remember, ask them how big their ICU is, just in case i decide to choose wright-patt. i will come in with a ICU identifier, so am wondering how big their ICU is! check out their base housing also, i am not sure where i heard this, but i think they are re-doing their housing. just in case that might be an option for you!!

so you are used to the midwest weather! then believe me, even though is sounds like these hot summers would be a godsend, they can be horrible!!!! my air has been on since april!! really hard on those utility bills!!

have you looked online at the housing allowances for each base you are interested in? that has been one of the things that i have been looking at. just search through yahoo or google "BAH rates for 2007". they will give you the list by what rank and what base. just a thought....

You are so right, I do remember him talking about the fiscal year ending in October. I have been looking at the housing allowances, but have not looked at Ohio yet. I have looked at Florida, Texas, and Colorado (my husband wants to go there!) Probably will go in and see what it is for Ohio. I will be asking lots of questions when I get to Wright-Patt. I will be sure to ask about the ICU as that is where I want to eventually end up. I, at one point, thought about waiting a year after I graduate so that I could get my ICU identifier, but my gut instinct tells me to go right in after graduation and I have always trusted my gut instinct! A couple of years of med/surg isn't going to hurt me. I look at it as good general experience. I will also be sure to check out the housing. I will keep you informed about how the process is going and let you know about the tour. By the way, thanks everyone for all the great info!

Does anyone know about the hospital at the USAF Academy? I would love to go to Colorado, but again want to get the best experience. I am thinking about Eglin, USAF Academy, Lackland, and Travis as my four choices as first duty station. Thought about Wright-Patt but my husband does not want to move to Dayton OH. I know, I know, later down the road, I may not have a say so on where I go, but I have been told I do have a choice with my first duty station, so Wright Patt is out first time around. Any insight into any of these hospitals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:)

My understanding about the AF academy is that it has a very small hospital. Eglin is medium size for an AF hospital and you still won't get a lot of experience there either, but it is a very nice place to live.

From the things I have heard about Travis lately I would totally scratch it off my list.

Just out of curosity...Why doesn't he want to go to Wright-Patterson/Dayton? That is if you don't mind sharing.

He just doesn't want to live in Ohio. We live in Indiana now, and I guess he just wants a change of scenery. I told him ultimately it is going to be where I can get the best experience. I am looking at the future, as far as furthering my education, and I want to go to a hospital where I can learn as much as I can. By the way, what have you heard about Travis? The AF is sending those of us who are interested in joining to Travis for a couple of days in July where we will tour the base, meet with the medical staff and have the opportunity to talk with those who work in the clinical area with which we will be assigned. I may or may not be going, depends on my work schedule and if I can get those days off. My recruiter, however, has already signed me up...so we will see. If I am not able to go to Travis, then he is taking me up to Wright-Patt for a tour.

AF medical community is actually fairly small. Several of my friends that went to Travis's ICU are now getting out d/t the management there. No one I have talked to lately has anything positive to say about Travis's hospital.

Nellis AFB (Las Vegas, NV) is also a hospital w/NTP.
