USAF Flight nurse school and survival school??

Would like to hear from the USAF flight nurses out there regarding their experiences at the Flight Nurse school at Brooks AFB. (good, bad, etc)

Also, how is the survival school that flight nurses and medics must attend? Its not the same one that other flight crews goto in Washington state. Where in Texas is it?

Thanks!

Thank you Miss Mab for the insight. I will attempt to contact a Healthcare recruiter this week. I could not find the thread you mentioned, "Reserve Nurse". If there is a way to lead me to it I would appreciate it.

Thanks Again!!

It is on page 4 I think, called reserve nursing, just in case this still doesn't work! :)

I know a few of you on this thread recently started in the AF reserves as flight nurses. I am interested in doing this in the future and I am eager to hear how your training is going and about your overall experience is so far.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this thread!

Ok I got the straight scoop. I called USAFSAM at Brooks AFB and spoke directly with the registrar (Andrew). He informed me that yes ,the flight nurses will be going to the full 18 day SERE course at Fairchild AFB beginning after September 2009. Yes, 2009. Should be able to get in before the transition. :w00t:

My reserve squadron will be at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs. Its a brand spankin new unit set to stand up on 4 April 2008.

Hi Natef26, has your unit been inaugurated yet? I'm a former 302nd Reservist now in school and would love to sign back on when I graduate.

The unit stood up back in early April IIRC. They do mandate that you have 1 year of being a nurse before they'll let you join. I won't be joining afterall, due to some personal reasons. Pretty bummed about it as it looks to be a great unit. If you want the recruiter POC let me know. He is a very gung ho guy and takes care of things quickly to expedite the process.

I would appreciate that. As I don't yet have 15 posts, you may not be able to PM me. If that doesn't work, would you mind dropping me an email to springsjc (at) excite (dot) com? Sorry to hear things didn't work out for you to join.

Are you working in COS currently? I lived there until 1998, then moved to Denver metro for a job. I hear that both Penrose and Memorial have built new facilities in the past couple of years.

Just an update on the whole flight school/SERE thing....

These two courses have always been required before returning to your home unit to finish ground training classes and becoming a qualified flight nurse.

It used to be that you could take either one(FS, SERE) in whatever order made more sense as far as timing, availablity, etc.

Well, now that they've changed the requirement to the full "real" SERE course up in WA, you now must absolutely attend that couse before you can go on to flight school and continue the process.

Why? Don't wanna paint an ugly picture, of course, but apparently there's something to the wisdom of not spending a lot of money on someone for a five week flight school if for whatever reason they are unable to complete the shorter one. Interesting....

Nate! I'm so sorry to hear you're not going to be joining us. I hope whatver held this up won't interfere with FN opportunities on the outside 'cause your resume sure seems custom made for outside flying....(with a little ER that is :) I'm so selfish...Try it though I think you'd probably love it)

Best!

Hello...I was selected to interview this coming week for flight nurse out of the MNPLS unit. The LtCol who did an informal interview over the phone and set me up to go next week in person, told me the following:

2 months flight school in Texas

Full Survival (SERE) school (17 days I believe) in WA

I also thought she said 23 days or 4 weeks or so for COT training in Maxwell AFB in AL. If someone knows the correct length for COT please let me know.

You can google air force survival school and get a hit for the website to see what that is all about. If you google air force reserve officer training, the Maxwell AFB site should come up and you can see about the officer training.

Someone please let me know if you have experienced any different. She said that they have recently changed how they are doing things with the flight nurse/crew training.

Also, if anyone has recently interviewed and has been selected to go, could you let me know how the process went...from time of selection to getting the ball rolling and being off to flight school.

She made it sound like the instruction for these were not all in one block of time, but may be broken up due to timing and getting one in time slots.

Any help would be appreciated. Have a good night. Rebecca

Survival school is now a dreadful 38 days long in Spokane

28 days of FN school at Brooks

and 5 or 2 weeks, if prior enlisted at COT in alabama

Actually, the WA component is only 19 calender days. You will definitely not be doing any 38 day course.
