USA to Australia for temporary stay!?

Hi everyone!

I am a NICU nurse with my BSN in the US. I have dreamed of going to Australia since the day I was born and the more I think about it, the more I feel NOW IS THE TIME:) :)

I have questions though!!

Can someone tell me where the bigger NICUs are in Australia? But most importantly, do any of you guys know of agencies that do placment of nurses for 6 months rather then 2yr contracts?

I'm an LVN now but when I get my RN and put a little experience under my belt my dream is to work in Australia as a nurse. I appreciate all the info everyone has posted here and would like to learn more so please keep posting all! :)

Especially what city you work in and the names of Hospitals. I really don't have much of a clue about Australia, what the areas are like. Any info would be much appreciated by all I'm sure. Thanks!:heartbeat

Hi Faeriewand! Australia is a big country and the major cities vary in their climate and populations as much as the major cities in the US. It would be like someone from Australia asking us to describe all the major cities in the States and their major hospitals. My recommendation to you is to come to Australia on a visit first (perhaps a vacation to celebrate finishing your RN??). Most companies that will sponsor you for a visa will require you to sign a 1-2 year contract, so I would highly recommend visiting first so you don't get here and realize it wasn't right for you. Decide which areas you like the best and go from there.

I live in Melbourne for a private hospital as a staff Div 1 RN. I LOVE it here, though I've met many who prefer the warm, tropical climate of Northern Queensland or the beaches of Sydney. It gets quite cold here in winter, but our summer weather got to 115F+ over the last few months. I wish you the best of luck on your research and finishing your RN!

hi I am in U.S California, Los Angeles, interested in going to Australia. Does anyone know how is emergency nursing in Australia? protocols, autonomy to initiate protocols like in the United States. I just wanted to find out a little bit more ER in OZ, I do read a few journals, and it seems to be great down there, also I love the Australian way of life, and cultural values. Once again I ll be very thankful for any information.

I am in the US and have an active nurse license. My nurse education is from China. I plan to apply for initial registration in OZ. Shall I find sponsor first or apply for initial registration from Nurses Board of State first? Does anybody recommend a hospital to me in Victoria?
