US trained NP wants to work in NZ

Published

Hi all, I was recently accepted into 2 nursing programs in the US. One confers both a BSN/MSN (focus in women's health for the MSN) and the second one confers only a MSN (family nurse practitioner) in which I do not obtain a BSN, but rather a conditional RN degree in which I can sit for the NCLEX and practice as a registered nurse, I just don't have a BSN. These are both direct entry into advanced practice nursing degrees.

I have been searching, emailing and researching the last few months about what the requirements are in New Zealand for internationally trained nurses/nurse practitioners entering the country. My husband is from Christchurch and I want to move there with him, start a family, and begin practicing as an NP once I'm done with school. I have been told by people at NZNO that usually NP's start out by working as RNs, and then apply to become NPs. However I am wondering if it's possible to work as an RN without having a BSN. If I have a degree as an RN-to-MSN without the BSN, can I still become a nurse practitioner in NZ? Can I still practice as a registered nurse?

I'm so confused, and struggling to pick a program based on this. I want to focus in women's health however it might be more marketable to enter the New Zealand workforce as a family nurse practitioner. Any advice/tips are greatly appreciated!

In Australia which is a totally different country to NZ nurse practitioners have Bachelor then follow that up with a masters in nurse practitioner - after gaining at least 3 years experience in their specialty.

You can obtain a post graduate degree - masters which is a initial qualifying degree to become RN IF you already have a non nursing Bachelors degree. These nurses are accepted into NZ thorough the trans tasman agreement.

To become a NP they would need experience and yet another masters in nurse practitioner before NP.

Do not know if NZ does this!

How can one be considered an advanced practise nurse without experience, just a nursing degree, masters or whatever?

Here is the link to NP and I was right they want at least 4 years of experience before applying for NP and require a masters in nurse practitioner, all up, thats 5 years of studying nursing.

RN - they want an overseas equivalent, so that would be equivalent to a Bachelors degree, whether it is post grad masters or not, as long as you have the seen equivalent to a graduate nurse in NZ.
