Hi everyone. I'm just finishing my last few shifts as a preceptor student.. and now I have my very FIRST nursing job interview!!!! Anyway, It seems there are some common questions that are asked during these stressful events and there are a few I need some help with!!! I have my answers prepared but I'm not so confident about them!!! Please help!!!
1. Mr H's son pulls you aside and explains that he feels as if his dad is not receiving good care. He goes on to describe how rude nurses on the previous shift were and that his father had to wait two hours to be cleaned up after a poop! What is your response?
2. When administrating meds to your pt, he/she states that she has never seen that little orange pill before. What do you do?
3. You have been assigned four pts halfway through the shift, one becomes very ill and you are having problems coping with the assignment, what do you do?
4. It's your second shift with the same pt and you notice his LOC is decreased and his O2 is 88% on RA. What are your actions?

1. be empathetic and tell the son that you will look into the situation ( and really look into the situation)
2. explain to the pt. what the little orange pill is and why it's being given.
3. talk to your nm...but the sick pt. is your priority.
4. put 02 on him; get vital signs, auscultate lungs and call md right away with your findings.

For situation #2, I would not give the pill until I had double-checked it. The patient might be right.

I agree with LLG-When the patient says something is wrong, take them seriously.

BTDT...just double checked the original MDs order and educated the patient on the new medication.
It also may be a case where it is the same medication that pt has taken for years, but is now being provided under a generic form.
many times pts. are put on new meds while in the hosp. so it wouldn't be an unusual situation.
BTDT...
BTDT????? what's that stand for?
