UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing - Evening/Weekend Program

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Hi!

Anybody here from the UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing - Evening/Weekend Program?

Thanks, Dan. You have been a tremendous help to me. I like to be prepared and know what it is that might happen next. I am going with the idea that I won't hear anything until May. I definitely have enough going on here to distract myself until then.........at least that is what I am trying to tell myself.

Hi Everyone,

So, I am thinking about starting the part time nursing program at Shadyside. I will work full time while going to school? What are the classes like? Any suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

E/W classes meet two nights a week, with lab or clinical on the weekends (labs for A/P and Micro will be every Sat, clinical once you reach the 200's will be every other weekend, both days). For the first year, you'll have no nursing classes, just your sciences. The labs will be at Chatham, with lecture at Shadyside. You can buy all of your textbooks through Chatham's bookstore.

Hi! I am currently in my second year in Shadyside's E/W program. The first year you will take Micro, Nutrition, A&P I and II, Logic, and Human Growth and Development. Your nursing classes start the second year. Last year, I attended classes all year on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30, with a lab on Saturdays from 10-12.

Starting this year, we attend class on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5:30- 8:00 with lab/clinical on Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30. The E/W program is excellent, with great instructors. It is very challenging, but definitely doable. If I can answer any other questions for you, let me know!

Thanks Christine!

The classes are two nights a week throughout the program and every saturday for the first year?

Could you tell me more about the schedule maybe break it down by year?

I really appreciate your help!

For the first two years you'll have class 2 nights a week and every Saturday for lab. Once you start the 200 level, you'll have clinical Sat and Sun, every other weekend (I know with E/W students they were experimenting with 12hr clinical days so they could have more weekends off during the summer, don't know if that's a permanent change or not).

When I did E/W, during the 2nd year, it was something like this

1st semester, 2nd year

Mon, Tues, and Wed, class 5:30-8:30 (this semester you have classes 3 nights a week because you don't have any clinical or lab requirements)

2nd Semester, 2nd year

Mon 5:30-8:30 pharm lecture

Wed 5:30-9:30 Fundamentals lecture

Sat 6:30am-3:30 clinical (half day at hospital half at school in lab)

Plus you had to fit in an hr-2 hr every other week Pharm lab (they offered various evening slots as well as daytime slots)

I only did E/W for a year while waiting on a daylight seat, so I did not take my sciences at Shadyside. From what I've heard, I would imagine you would have lecture two evenings a week from 5:30-8:30 or so, and lab on Saturday mornings.

Hope this all makes sense!

I'm applying here as well. Do you know if they accept transfer credits from CCAC? I want to knock out the college classes before I start, and no one there has responded to my emails!

Hi, they do accept transfer credits from CCAC.......however, A&P I and A&P II must be taken at the same place. Are you applying for full time or part time? If you are applying for full time, there is a class that starts at the end of February. You still have time to apply and start then. Good luck! If I can help in any other way, let me know!

Thanks!

I'm going to do part-time. I work all day and have a little one to tend to. The web site doesn't seem to have any openings for the pre-test right now. Do you know if they don't do them in the fall?

Also, do you know when the next pt program starts?

The next pt program starts next fall. They run them once a year. I am in my 2nd year of the 4 yr. program. It is a great program ........I am really enjoying it. The instructors are great!

Since you have a year till then next program starts, you could get some of your sciences out of the way. You need Microbiology, A&P 1 and 2, Human Development, Logic and Human Diversity. There should still be availability for testing now......if you can't find the info on the website, call the school.

Laura

Thanks! I just got an email from Shadyside today as well. I'm definitely going to sign up for Human Development, Logic, and Nutrition, as CCAC offers those online.

I'll call them about the testing tomorrow.
