I think it would have meant chaos for UPMC if there hadn't been pay cuts. That kind of obvious excess wouldn't cut it with so many layoffs. There would have been boycotts, protests, maybe even looting or terrorism. Who knows. The people of Pittsburgh would have been POed.

Good point that the departments decided, not the higher ups. Although, there are only so many cuts that can be made before you have to sacrifice people.

I think when you take a city-based hospital, expand it by almost 10 times to provide health care to an entire region, create a global footprint with their services, and take it to a position that consistently ranks in the top 15, then you might have the capacity to demand a little more money.

But if you just visit forums and whine about other people who are movers and shakers, then you might find a rational foundation from which to be heard.

Oh no you didn't. Oh gag (cough, hold on, let me catch my breath) I worked for UPMC, and the term "movers and shakers" is not how their administration is described. Oh my............not even if you were glancing at them from 200 miles away could they keep that lie of a label going.

UPMC is a mover and a shaker despite its leadership and administration, not because of it. The nurses have to perform mini-miracles for there not to be an unplanned death on each and every unit on a daily basis. On their typical M/S unit, one has to be cruising at almost NASCAR speeds to simply pass meds due to all the interruptions/meetings/new policies to sign etc. And we are saying only..........to pass meds. Assessments, personal time for compassion, routine care such as dressing changes..........are commonly missed or just not done. Yes, you heard me right......assessments are commonly NOT DONE. Go watch any UPMC facility unit.........most daylight nurses dont even enter their pt. rooms except for passing meds until after noon. Many nurses have their assessment documented just a few minutes after getting report............BEFORE SEEING THE PT. Thats what the working conditions are like. Nothing is ever in place as it should be, the routine is very tedious, totally nonproductive. Its everyday workers cant get a thing done because there is no stability to anything in that organization. Instead of assessing pt's, the nurses are running around trying to get six different signatures to OK a CT to check for a PE, when the order was written an hour ago and was STAT.

That's UPMC in a nutshell. Its about the impression of giving care, not about giving care. Take it from someone who has been on the front lines. I also keep in contact with a a few co workers from those days still. Guess what...........its gotten worse since I left.

UPMC strives because its nurses refuse to give in to the dollar driven mentality of its administration. Its nurses, CNA's, dietary, housekeeping staff, maintenance crew...........everyone.......on a daily basis, saves the administration from itself.
