UPenn Nursing vs. Drexel Nursing Undergrad

I have been lucky enough to be accepted at both institutions as I am about to embark on my decision to go into Nursing Undergrad. I have completed two years at a different University as an English Major and am now making the big switch to become a nurse ( I want to be a Nurse Practitioner in Women's Health). I have been given a large scholarship to , and with the Co-op I would make about $13,000, and am eligible to be in the program Bsn to MSN, achieving my Master's in one year. However, despite all this, being accepted at Upenn is also a fantastic achievement. I know that with the high demand of nurses, it doesn't really matter the Name of the institution you go to, however it is very difficult to turn down a name like Penn. If I did go to Penn, because they don't give academic scholarships, my parents would be in a lot of debt what with loans, and I would have to go on to get my Masters while working. My question is I've been told that if I want to accelerate quickly to, say, a directing position, or travel internationally, it is best to go with UPenn, because it is a bigger name. I am wondering if this is true, and considering I have always wanted to go to Penn I should accept and go there, despite the more economically friendly option that is Drexel.

(also, in a shallow sense, Penn's campus is much more appealing)

Would you recommend I not look @ .... all I've ever heard is it is tough............. but it's good to take the tough route right?!? :(

I can not recommend this school but I will not tell you to not to go. It is totally up to you. When I started we had lot of students but as the time goes lot of them were getting dropped off. Among the people who survived 40 % of them could not pass the final hesi.If you fail 3 clinical classes, you are out of the program also you can not transfer the credits from . Passing score for any nursing class is 76% and there is hesi with each course which counts 10-15% of your grade. At the end they will make you take exit hesi and thats where extremely smart students fail. I have 3.8 GPA but still needed to take exit hesi 2 times to get a score above 950. If you fail the second attempt you need to repeat a course which 2000 dollars. You can also search for some other threads about drexel exit hesi. COOP is awesome but still a waste of time. You need to spend more time in school than any other nursing program;Also Drexel has very rigid rules, such as not rounding the hesi score, no adjustments in anything. If you think you can survive all this, you are more than welcome to go there because in the end you will have a knowledge of a physician. Best of Luck

Did you get any scholarship?, they normally offer that for a average student at the beginning of the program.If you have no scholarship, get ready to pay about 28000 out of your pocket, it changes year to year. You should always maintain 3.0 GPA if you want to maintain the scholarship. They will normally make you pay the fee in the beginning of the year, if there is $10 balance, they will put you on banner web hold. I can not ***** enough about their rigid rules. wow 28k... no fun. No I have not been admitted I'm just basically researching and seeing what my options are. And about them not being helpful... OMG that is exactly how the college I'm going to is. They continually lie, act deceitful with my financial aid and are of no help. They told me the WRONG book to buy for my psych class (mind you this is the book store)... it took endless time contacting financial aid to even be awarded my rightfully due PELL GRANTS and the college is just a joke. That's why I just want to get my pre-reqs done and get the heck out .... Ugh I guess 's out of the question now then..... I'm not dealing with unhelpful advisors ever again if I can avoid it at all costs :/

Since you are ready to take challenge, apply there and let's see how much scholarship you get. Your school sounds very deceitful but I did not get such an experience from .Drexel is very strict with their rules and it is nation's toughest nursing program.Best of luck

This is pretty typical of any nursing program. I don't know of any program where clinical courses can be transferred. Failing 3 clinical courses is pretty lenient, I think. For most programs, it's two.

The HESI requirement is pretty standard for most programs in this area. It's a way to prep for the NCLEX, and it also protects the school from having too many students fail the NCLEX the first time, which can affect their accreditation (I think).

I'm surprised you don't see the value in a CO-OP expreience. Granted, I didn't do a co-op with my program, but I think gaining experience before graduation can only enhance your learning. You can take the theoretical and textbook knowledge and apply them to practice before you actually become a nurse (and get paid for doing so).

All schools have rigid rules, and for a reason. Nursing school is tough no matter where you go. None of what you said is solely a experience. All nursing programs have the same rules, passing requirements, etc . for the most part.

That said, best of luck at Drexel to the original poster. I'm currently in the RN-to-BSN completion program and am definitely enjoying the challenging nature of the courses (even statistics!).

Hi, if I were you I would go to Penn.

There will be lots of opportunities for scholarships and grants, because it's quite big school.

I believe ranking of the school is not the most important thing, but quite important things to consider!:)
