UPDATED nashville new grad pay

As of October, 2010 new nurse grad pay is $18.25 for medical surgical floors and $19.50 for critical care. From 1900-2359 the pay differential is $3.00. 2400-0700 the pay differential is $3.50. Weekend differential is more..but I don't know what it is.

Wow, that's crazy low starting wage. In 2006/2007, most hospitals in the Detroit area were starting GN's at $23 or $24 an hour. We're on a conservative 5 yr plan to move to the Nashville area. I sure hope the pay for experienced RN's with 10 plus years in ER/cath lab/PACU is comparable to here.

Are you taking into consideration the cost of living of Detroit vs. Nashville? I'm planning on moving to Nashville Summer 2013..the pay is lower than Chicago..where I live now..but the housing in Nashville is 70% cheaper than here...In Nashville I could easily buy a house for $150,000...that's just not possible at all here! A 3 bed, 2 bath condo..not even a house...here is over $300,000

You know the housing market in Detroit is some of the worst in the country, right? I'm just hoping it's somewhat comparable. By the time my wife and I move, we will have paid off all debt and saved hopefully close to 30k. We're both nurses, her longer than me, and have a plan to move in 5 years or less. As long as no significant bumps pop up, we should be able to do it.

If you're talking about stuff like groceries, car stuff and general living expenses I'm under the impression it's relatively close to the same. Property taxes and insurance where we are are comparable - actually taxable value has went down twice in the last few years. Home pricing has always been a little bit more in Nashville not a lot, but more. The house we live in now is in a very safe and quite town nestled between 2 Metro Detroit suburbs where a lot of attractions of South East MI are. The house (1200sq ft nice size back and front yard) was $142k in April 2007 and is probably worth $95k if we're lucky right now. Houses I've been looking at in the Nashville and surrounding area for what we want (1700sq ft detached garage and big yard) in a safe area seem to be around 160k or so. Same amenities here with updates could be obtained for around 140k so Nashville still just a bit more, but not a deal breaker by any means. Once I pay off my bike and am done with my lease on my Jeep I will have an instant pay raise of $700 monthly so a few dollars less per hour won't hurt as bad as it would if I were to try and have us move tomorrow.

See.. I guess Detroit is a lot cheaper than here too! Here our sales tax is 9.75%. I just paid $4.20/gallon of gas yesterday. It's yuppified now..where it was "up and coming before" when we bought it a little over 9 years ago.. we paid $335k for a condo!!! which is pretty much a glorified apartment in my eyes. That's just INSANE!!! The people on the first floor have kinda the same layout as mine but theirs is a duplex down and mine is a duplex up..they probably have 200 more sq. ft. than me.. and they have their condo for sale for $435,00! That's INSANE! It's just really expensive in Chicago.. Living in Nashville is like heaven to me.. I'll never have a house staying here.. I'm sick of living here anyway! I can't wait to move there!!!

What do you seriously think you have to make per hour in order to buy a house and maintain your bills and such if your house is like $160,000?

See.. I guess Detroit is a lot cheaper than here too! Here our sales tax is 9.75%. I just paid $4.20/gallon of gas yesterday. I live in a condo..it's about 1900 sq feet.. 2 floors.. 3 bedrooms plus a den, 2 bathrooms.. I live in a trendy neighborhood.. I live about 7 minutes from downtown.. it's changed alot since I moved here Nov 2001..I still heard the occasional gunshots:eek:!! It's yuppified now..where it was "up and coming before" when we bought it a little over 9 years ago.. we paid $335k for a condo!!! which is pretty much a glorified apartment in my eyes. That's just INSANE!!! The people on the first floor have kinda the same layout as mine but theirs is a duplex down and mine is a duplex up..they probably have 200 more sq. ft. than me.. and they have their condo for sale for $435,00! Right now with 4 yrs experience a staff nurse is making $25 to $26hr with benifits - that's not including any shift diff or attendance incentives, etc. I'm starting in the cath lab next week at a per diem 1; which means I commit to working 64 hrs per pay period (2 weeks) and will make $36.60hr, but the position does not include any benifits. I will be added to my wife's insurance instead; which is fine because she works for the same health system as an RN as well and it's the same insurance I've had for the past 6(+) years. She's been a nurse for 8 years and is nearing the top of the pay scale as staff so it makes sense for her to carry the benefits and me be per diem so it's like a one-two punch now to our bills. Sorry to ramble, but that's where I'm at when it's 4am.

You just reminded me. I had a friend who graduated in the summer of 2008 or 2009... can't remember.. her first job as a new grad was $25 an hour...I think that was in acute care. She stayed there for a year and then went to work somewhere else so I would assume that she's making more now.

I assume you are talking about the Chicago area where your friend was working in acute care. At the hopital system I work for, per diem 1 is per diem 1 wherever you go. Not everyone or every dept offers it though. In fact this job was listed as a full time staff job, but I was lucky enough to have the guts to negotiate for per diem 1 and was also lucky enough that the director was cool and liked what I had to say. It also didn't hurt that after about halfway into the interview we both started talking about our harleys and how much we like riding them. Now I just hope I like the job and make a good first impression on all my co-workers. I'm very drawn toward procedures and moderate sedation and the cath lab is ALL of that plus I will get to "play" with some high tech toys and touch some lives in a positive way everyday. I'm coming back into the clinical setting after a brief stint in emergency medicine research after working only ER 9 years before and close to 4 years after nursing school. I decided I was not going to walk back into the abusive arena of an urban ER if I returned to the clinical setting and cath lab sounds interesting and like something I can get my head into - if you know what I mean. Just want something I can geek out on. I've got to make this the last move I make for at least 2 years. I bounced a bit too much over this past year. I can do anything for three 12's a week at that rate of pay - even IF the doctors are as horrible as everyone has told me. I'm 6'1 at 250lbs, hopefully they'll just overlook me and pick on someone else.

In fact this job was listed as a full time staff job, but I was lucky enough to have the guts to negotiate for per diem 1 and was also lucky enough that the director was cool and liked what I had to say. It wasn't in Chicago...if I'm remembering correctly..I think it was in a south burb on the outskirts of Chicago.

I really hope you like the job too! It definitely sounds interesting to say the least. What a great learning environment that will be. You crack me up! Gotta love a Harley person. I have a lot of Harley friends.. I'm taking a riding course at the end of June. I'm so excited! I plan on buying a Harley before the move to Nashville!
