Hi all. I am up for a promotion that will move me into a position of having 5-10 direct reports, all new grads. This will be my first position in which I have direct reports. I was asked by my Director to apply for the position and I am in the interviewing process now. I have a couple of questions.
The first has to do with the interview process. I will have a peer panel interview and then a leadership panel interview. How will interviewing for this kind of a position differ from other interviews? How to best prepare for it?
Second, can you point me toward some good resources for a novice manager?

It has been a while..... However, the difference in frontline management (entry level) interview questions and being a frontline staff employee was very little. Most of my interviews were around behaviors and my methods of problem solving. The only difference may have been 1-2 questions around experience with shift level finance, staffing a shift, and managing direct reports. You either have this experience or you don't. Some managers (to include the one who asked you to apply), may hire you with or without such experience and train you, so no worries.
Good resources for novice managers are the same for experienced managers: books and guides geared toward management. I read a ton before landing my first managerial position. What style of leadership do you like? The answer to this question can be your guide to start you off.
Other resources will be the on-the-job training you will receive from your organization and human resources. Plus, mentorship from your new peers and middle and upper managers. Also, it may be a good idea to join a local chapter of your nursing specialty if you have not done so already and/or a nursing leadership association to help with training, resources, and networking. Good luck!
