I have been an MDS coordinator for 12 years at the same place have worked there a total of 13 years I was an LPN for 12 of those years and finally finished with my ASN and currently back in school for my BSN. I just recently got hired on in a hospital on the med surg unit night shift weekend option I currently work m-f no weekends. I am scared I am getting in over my head I do have pretty good critical thinking skills so I am told and I have good clinical skills. Not sure I am making the right decision if anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.

Thank you

I would keep the M-F job as backup just in case the hospital situation doesn't work. You really need to make the effort though, to make the RN license more beneficial to your career. Just take it one shift at a time. Good luck.

Not sure if working 7 days a week is quite the answer! If she works the M-F and then the weekend option job too she won't be able to do either job very well.

First off, RainRN, congrats on your RN and also on going back to school so soon for your BSN.

Unless you plan on staying a MDS coordinator for the rest of your career, going to med/surg is a smart career move. You will learn a lot.

I like to call myself "Jack of all trades, master of none" simply because I deal with a lot of different diagnoses but don't get to go too deep in any one patient population. You will learn how to prioritize patients' needs and wants. This is also a good stepping stone for other career moves.

I say to give it at least a year or two to get your feet wet and see if you really like bedside nursing or not. Good luck with everything!

Thank you for both for your help this has been a really hard decision. I am staying prn at current job and taking the med surg position. My family is really on me due to all the stress my current job has caused me and affected me at home, so I am just hoping for the best.

Thank You again for responding
