Unsupportive people....

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm sorry. Just need to vent.

I have a friend that has been negative since the day I told her I wanted to pursue a career in nursing. Her mother is a nurse and started a long time ago and struggled with her studies. My friend worked at an agency that placed home health aides. So, being that she feels she has worked around nurses, she feels like she knows all about the field.

She feels that she is being a "real" friend by informing me of how hard it is. I'm sorry, but anything worth doing and achieving is usually challenging. I know this because, this will be my second degree. She, on the other hand, has not experienced having to work hard to obtain a college level degree and skill at all. I say that to say, I think I am well aware that this will require hard work! She is also a very self-centered and superficial person, so she thinks that hands-on work is just too hard.

There is a way to provide your two cents, or give a "heads up", while remaining positive and supportive. I told her today, you haven't even asked what area of nursing I'm interesting in. You haven't asked me why I'm choosing this field, or anything else. You just want to share all the negative things you think you know. I'm not your mother or those home health aides, I'm ME!

It's just unbelievable how people are so *******' negative, when you are trying to do something positive.:uhoh3:

My question is why is she your friend?

Negative, self centered, superficial - hmm, those are not qualities I want in a friend

If I were you, I would keep my distance.

She is probably jealous of you that you want to better yourself.

We have been friends for over 24 years. Unfortunately, she has gradually become this way. I'm taking that advice and keeping an even further distance until I'm done. This will be hard enough as it is and I'm already nervous enough about it.
