I was just told by Medical Staffing Network that I needed to do 20 online modules prior to my physical orientation day and that the 20 modules would not be paid. I was told that Florida Hospital does not pay nurses for online work and that all the nurses that have been hired there had no problem working for free. When I explained that by federal and state law any hours spent either at work or on a computer at home doing work needed to be paid I was told that I was no longer a candidate for the position. I am looking for other nurses that have either lost the opportunity for a job because they refused to work for free or nurses that did the orientation and did not get paid for it. We as a profession need to follow federal and state laws and hold hospitals and travel companies accountable to following those laws and quit taking jobs and doing work without getting paid. I will be filing a complaint against Florida hospital and Medical Staffing Network for their unethical practices of work without compensation.

Sounds wholly illegal to me.

All of the hospitals that I have worked at allowed me to do the module while I was on the clock therefore paying me for them. I think the agency should do the right thing and reimburse you for time spent at home working on the modules, although it sounds like that's not their protocol and they don't plan on changing it anytime soon. If you really want the job and are willing to look at the time spent doing the modules for free as an investment to getting the job then that might be an option. This might just be a red flag for you to stay away from them as well.
