University of Washington SoN Fall 2013

U.S.A. Washington

Anyone applying to the UW SoN for fall 2013? Anyone else FREAKING OUT about it like I am?

Oh and by the way, it may seem like a lot of money is being spent the first quarter on books but these are used for the entire program. The only additional books I bought that I didn't get in the beginning were the WONGs nursing care of infants and the notes on nursing book.

Hey guys, anybody gonna' be living in McMahon Hall this upcoming year?

The way we knew who was part of our cohort was based on our clinical placement list. When they send that list out to you, it will have everyones names listed. Just be careful about who you are adding to your facebook group until then.

Hey guys. Long time follower, first time commenter. Is anyone else having confusion over the summer orientation schedule? I was told in my summer enrollment confirmation email that orientation was this Friday. Unfortunately I got an email this afternoon from a staff member saying they missed me at orientation today. I work night shifts so I was sleeping when she sent the email and have had patients til now so I didn't see the email until a few minutes ago. Hoping I can find some answers tonight and start my damage control with tomorrow's work day.

Edit: "today" meaning Wednesday the 19th. Oops.

Saena, the orientation was on Wednesday AND tomorrow :( hopefully they can do your vision test tomorrow because that's the only major thing we did yesterday. Good luck!

Anyone have a textbook list for this year or past years? Would love to start hunting around for used ones...

Thanks YoungIdealist. I got things worked out in the end. And I wholeheartedly agree about the textbooks.

These were our text books last year (2012-2013). Keep in mind, it sounds like you may have a electronic book package (digital books)- we did not. What type/version of the books you choose is really up to personal preference. Heck, some people didn't find particular books helpful and never used them. It's really up to you. Besides getting them used, I would say the best place to buy your books in probably Amazon (especially with free student Prime). Even the "bundle" option from the UW bookstore (when they finally get around to making it... slowly) is not as good a price as just buying the books from online.

NURS 301 - Anatomy

  • Essential Clinical Anatomy 4e11 Moore 9780781799157 (may be different?)

NURS 304 - Patho

  • Understanding Pathophysiology W/ Web Access Huether 9780323078917

NCLIN 306 - Basic nursing skills (Lab)

  • Clinical Nursing Skills 8e12 Basic To Advanced Smith 9780135114735 (I do NOT suggest a digital version, bc you need to bring the book to lab)

  • Davis S Comprehensive Handbook Laboratory Diagnostic Testing Nursing Implications Van Leeuwen 9780803623040 (can download pdf version from online sources...)

FYI: books fo fall quarter cost nearly $1,000 but they will be used for the entire first year.

Also, it looks (for now) like NCLIN 306 will be using Taylor S Clinical Nursing Skills 3 E10 978-1582557359 (instead of Clinical Nursing Skills)

Finally, I would buy the physical copy of Jarvis (physical Assessment), as you'll want to bring it to lab.

So I made last the FB group for mine and abalone's cohort. I had nothing but time when I saw the clinical placement list and I took the link in the body of an email message and typed each name in the "to" box until the name popped up. I wasn't aware of the listserv at the time. You could send the link through the listserv, but I would wait until the end of July to do so, because we are a part of the 1st year listserv still.

Also, limit it to one maybe two admins only. Abalone and I are the only admins on our site.

Additionally, I made separate "groups" with my clinical partners and we shared our written up meds to cut down on the hours of care plans that you will be writing. Plan on your first care plan to take 4-5 hours because you really are uncomfortable with them. I was very versed in writing them and by the end of the first quarter i was still taking 2-3 hours to write them. It REALLY depends on your professor.

Also, I participated in the Q&A session and the tours for the summer orientation. I will also be in the Fall program orientation, one piece of advice is if you have specific questions, write them down and bring them with you. We will have about 45 minutes of time to do a Q&A session with no admins or anyone around. We are frank and brutally honest about what to expect.

Also, take advantage of the mentee/mentor program. Alot of us still have our quizzes and notes that we found helpful to get us through the first two quarters especially.
