University if Washington Perinatal NS certificate.

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Has anybody here applied to the UW Perinatal Post Masters certificate program? I'm a Psych NP living in So. Cal and I'm hoping on getting into the program and competing it via distance from San Diego. I've applied for the fall 2014 cohort and I'm curious to see if anyone else out there is taking the same route. Has anyone heard anything about the certificate program? I spooks with the program coordinator, but I'd be interested in hearing from other prospective students.

I applied to the UW DNP-Perinatal Nurse Specialist program fall 2014, but not as a post-masters. I also talked to the program coordinator, Elena Bosque. Have u talked to her too? I asked her about completing it via distance (I'm from Hawaii), and she said that would absolutely be possible because they have clinical contacts all over.

Are you switching specialties from Psych to Perinatology or is your focus going to be on Infant Mental Health? If so, I believe they have a Infant Mental Health certificate program.

I'm extremely nervous to hear if I've been accepted or not!

hi telee73,

i actually spoke with ira kantrowitz-gordon, i think he might be more focused on the post-masters certificate programs. and he let me know that distance study is also totally possible from san diego, and that on campus requirements for class in seattle are about once a month or something like that. and i'm thinking i'd like to switch to perinatal nursing or some kind of combined psych/perinatal nursing, but i haven't ruled out adding on the infant mental health certificate as well. uw has some pretty unique fields of study and the fact that we can study via distance is great. did you get any information about when we might be notified concerning acceptance? i don't think i ever asked ira about a timeline!

good luck! i hope to see us both in the program come fall!

Lulu123,

Awesome! Infant Mental Health sounds so interesting! I had to apply for the perinatal track because the neonatal nurse practitioner track is on pause this year. Flying to Seattle once a month isn't too bad. I'm still trying to decide if I get in, whether to quit my job and move to Seattle or fly back/forth from Hawaii every month.

We should be notified of acceptance at the end of this month or mid-April at the latest. I was afraid when UW posted on their admissions blog that if there aren't enough applicants to sustain the track, competitive applicants will be turned away. The Perinatal Nurse Specialist program is one of those tracks!! EEK! It also said our applications will be counted with the nurse midwifery students. I have no experience with L/D. Let's hope we have enough applicants....

Good Luck and hope to see you in the fall as well!

Hey Telee73,

I hadn't seen that post about them not continuiing the track if they don't receive enough qualified applicants. Yikes! I hope there are more people out there who applied because this program sounds really interesting and I REALLY want it to be offered! I have no L/D experience either, or even mother-baby experience. I work a community based psych setting, so we provide a lot of nursing duties outside of the psych scope and there are SO many families, or mother-baby dyads that I see that could benefit from services, but are too mentally ill or developmentally delayed to really access them. So me and the other nurses end up providing a lot of family planning, prenatal education, breastfeeding assistance, etc. with almost no specialized training! Not good! That's my way of saying, I really want to be in this program! As of right now, I'm planning on staying in So Cal if I get into the program, just because it's home and I'd like to get established here in the field. And like you said, flying once a month to Seattle isn't too bad!

Let's cross our fingers that there are more applicants out there and we see each other come the fall! Good luck!!!

LuLu,

Did you get into the PNS program? Will I be seeing you in the Fall?
