Is anyone here a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist? I'm currently in a perinatal clinical nurse specialty program, but planning to switch to a Certified Nurse Midwifery program. I've been advised that this would be the best option because many hospitals are doing away with CNSs. There also seems to be more jobs and opportunities for a CNM compared to a CNS. What are your thoughts?

Esme12, Do you have a reference that states there is no liability in looking at a chart prior to a start of a shift? Thanks

I've been taught in nursing school to be prepared for your assignment and that means coming into work an extra 30 mins prior to the start of your shift to look up your patients that were assigned. This way, when you start your shift, you have a basic understanding of your patients. When your shift starts, you are then able to ask the appropriate questions to the off-going nurse, do bedside handoffs, pick up where the last nurse left off, and begin your patient care. I have been doing this for the past 7 years as a RN, but yesterday my manager came up to me and said looking up patients PRIOR to the start of your shift is a violation of labor laws and we are no longer allowed to do this. Looking up patients on the computer prior to clocking-in is considered "working" and is a violation. Could anyone please shed some light on this for me? Thanks!

Sobergirl, I'm moving from out of state. I was looking at places outside of Seattle because rent seems to be way less. I'm thinking of the Renton area next to Boeing and commuting to UW since we only have to be on campus 1x/week the first year. Anyone interested in doing carpool for the days we have to be on campus? Anyone hear about financial aid? I submitted the School of Nursing Financial Aid Application, but no response yet. I also follow the Financial Aid blog. Let me know if you start a FB group!

Yes I've heard and got accepted!! Check your mailbox. It comes by snail mail in a small envelope (i was expecting a big envelope)!! You must have gotten it if it came all the way to Hawaii already.

Lulu123, Awesome! Infant Mental Health sounds so interesting! I had to apply for the perinatal track because the neonatal nurse practitioner track is on pause this year. Flying to Seattle once a month isn't too bad. I'm still trying to decide if I get in, whether to quit my job and move to Seattle or fly back/forth from Hawaii every month. We should be notified of acceptance at the end of this month or mid-April at the latest. I was afraid when UW posted on their admissions blog that if there aren't enough applicants to sustain the track, competitive applicants will be turned away. The Perinatal Nurse Specialist program is one of those tracks!! EEK! It also said our applications will be counted with the nurse midwifery students. I have no experience with L/D. Lulu123 I applied to the UW DNP-Perinatal Nurse Specialist program fall 2014, but not as a post-masters. I also talked to the program coordinator, Elena Bosque. Have u talked to her too? I asked her about completing it via distance (I'm from Hawaii), and she said that would absolutely be possible because they have clinical contacts all over. Are you switching specialties from Psych to Perinatology or is your focus going to be on Infant Mental Health? If so, I believe they have a Infant Mental Health certificate program. I'm extremely nervous to hear if I've been accepted or not!

aloha heymabel! Yay, another applicant for UW DNP fall 2014. What speciality did you choose? I went to an info session and the speaker said we usually find out at the end of March, but they have the April "buffer" just in case. I tried digging through the web about the acceptance rate too, but with no luck. In the grad info session, she stated that applicants compete for the set number of spaces for each speciality. For example, if there are only 30 spots for FNP, the level of competition for those 30 spots depend on how many competitive applicants apply. Therefore, the acceptance rate would change every year based on available spots and the number of competitive applicants. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!
