  1. Is anyone here a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist? I'm currently in a perinatal clinical nurse specialty program, but planning to switch to a Certified Nurse Midwifery program. I've been advised that this would be the best option because many hospitals are doing away with CNSs. There also seems to be more jobs and opportunities for a CNM compared to a CNS. What are your thoughts?
  2. Esme12, Do you have a reference that states there is no liability in looking at a chart prior to a start of a shift? Thanks
  3. I've been taught in nursing school to be prepared for your assignment and that means coming into work an extra 30 mins prior to the start of your shift to look up your patients that were assigned. This way, when you start your shift, you have a basic understanding of your patients. When your shift starts, you are then able to ask the appropriate questions to the off-going nurse, do bedside handoffs, pick up where the last nurse left off, and begin your patient care. I have been doing this for the past 7 years as a RN, but yesterday my manager came up to me and said looking up patients PRIOR to the start of your shift is a violation of labor laws and we are no longer allowed to do this. Looking up patients on the computer prior to clocking-in is considered "working" and is a violation. Could anyone please shed some light on this for me? Thanks!
  4. Hi Lulu, Have you decided if you will attend UW in the Fall? Have you registered for classes yet?
  5. Sobergirl, I'm moving from out of state. I was looking at places outside of Seattle because rent seems to be way less. I'm thinking of the Renton area next to Boeing and commuting to UW since we only have to be on campus 1x/week the first year. Anyone interested in doing carpool for the days we have to be on campus? Anyone hear about financial aid? I submitted the School of Nursing Financial Aid Application, but no response yet. I also follow the Financial Aid blog. Let me know if you start a FB group!
  6. Congrats to all!! Looking forward to meeting you all in September! For those that live in Seattle, counting on you guys to show me around the emerald city!!! For now, better get started on that 2 page checklist of things To Do....
  7. Congratulations lulu!! Looking forward to meeting you and having class with you for the next couple of years! I need to get started on that 2 page checklist of things To Do! See you on Sept 17!!!
  8. Yes I've heard and got accepted!! Check your mailbox. It comes by snail mail in a small envelope (i was expecting a big envelope)!! You must have gotten it if it came all the way to Hawaii already.
  9. LuLu, Did you get into the PNS program? Will I be seeing you in the Fall?
  10. Yay! Looks like I'll be seeing you in the Fall LFroling!! You all should've gotten your letters by now if it made it here to Hawaii. Good Luck to those still waiting and Congrats to those who have been accepted. Excited to meet you all in September. By the way...it comes in a SMALL envelope
  11. Lulu123, Awesome! Infant Mental Health sounds so interesting! I had to apply for the perinatal track because the neonatal nurse practitioner track is on pause this year. Flying to Seattle once a month isn't too bad. I'm still trying to decide if I get in, whether to quit my job and move to Seattle or fly back/forth from Hawaii every month. We should be notified of acceptance at the end of this month or mid-April at the latest. I was afraid when UW posted on their admissions blog that if there aren't enough applicants to sustain the track, competitive applicants will be turned away. The Perinatal Nurse Specialist program is one of those tracks!! EEK! It also said our applications will be counted with the nurse midwifery students. I have no experience with L/D. Let's hope we have enough applicants.... Blog Title: Important Information for DNP Applicants Admissions Update Blog | School of Nursing Good Luck and hope to see you in the fall as well!
  12. Lulu123 I applied to the UW DNP-Perinatal Nurse Specialist program fall 2014, but not as a post-masters. I also talked to the program coordinator, Elena Bosque. Have u talked to her too? I asked her about completing it via distance (I'm from Hawaii), and she said that would absolutely be possible because they have clinical contacts all over. Are you switching specialties from Psych to Perinatology or is your focus going to be on Infant Mental Health? If so, I believe they have a Infant Mental Health certificate program. I'm extremely nervous to hear if I've been accepted or not!
  13. Hello Everyone!! March is here and I'm getting extremely anxious!! Does anyone know what kind of applicants they're looking for? LFroling89...did you choose the pediatric np or perinatal np program? Obsessive-Compulsive mailbox checking has begun!! Good Luck again to everyone!
  14. Awesome!! Please keep in touch. When we both get in, most of our classes will be together!! Congratulations on your BSN! Yes, the waiting game is tough for me especially since I'm the most impatient person ever!! :)
  15. aloha heymabel! Yay, another applicant for UW DNP fall 2014. What speciality did you choose? I went to an info session and the speaker said we usually find out at the end of March, but they have the April "buffer" just in case. I tried digging through the web about the acceptance rate too, but with no luck. In the grad info session, she stated that applicants compete for the set number of spaces for each speciality. For example, if there are only 30 spots for FNP, the level of competition for those 30 spots depend on how many competitive applicants apply. Therefore, the acceptance rate would change every year based on available spots and the number of competitive applicants. Hope this helps. Good Luck!! Keep in touch and hopefully we all meet up at orientation in the fall!
  16. Hello, The application process took me awhile too!! They were so specific about every component of the application. I believe the UW informs you by both email and snail mail. You might hear from email first then officially by snail mail where you accept or deny admission. The status of acceptance/rejection is also posted online on your MyUW grad application. This is my first time applying so I'm just assuming that's the process. Are you applying elsewhere other than UW? I haven't seen many threads/posts about people applying to UW's DNP anywhere on this site. I'm hoping their acceptance rate is better for graduates than undergrad. I heard how hard it was to get accepted to either their traditional or ABSN program. If we both get accepted, you'll have to show me around Washington state!!!
  17. DukeRN87! Glad you started the thread!! I'm applying for the DNP- Perinatal Nurse Specialist route. I heard that it is a full-time program so it is not advisable to also be working full-time as a RN. With their new revised DNP curriculum, students will not have the option of going part-time. Regardless of chosen specialty, we will all be in the same classes for the first year. I'm anxious for March already too. If I get in, I'll be moving to Seattle from Hawaii!! How was the application process for you? There were a lot of components to it!!
  18. Hello!! I also applied to the UW Fall 2014 DNP program! I'm getting very anxious. We won't hear till March. Keep in touch and maybe we'll see each other in the Fall!! Feel free to msg me and we can chat about this admissions process. Good Luck!
