Nursing Assessment 7/1

Who else is taking it ? I hear it's a beast of a class. Can anyone give some solid direction? I decided to take it with no other class because the consensus on here is that it's the hardest one offered.

RNtity,

It's comprehensive and detailed and yes, there is a sig amt of work, but (IMO) it is not hard. Everything comes directly from the lab manual and the text. If you follow the steps exactly, you can get an A, no prob. The quizzes are right from the book. No surprises. I took it alone, too, based on what I read here, but once i was in it, I realized I could have taken something else. Another good thing is that you can work ahead and that is a big help. That's what I did I appreciated that bec you cannot do that in all classes.

You want hard? Try Vulnerable (a bad dream) and Research (your worst nightmare)

I'll tell you more next week when I can breathe again. I'm still in Research hell at the moment and just trying to crawl my way out.

Thank you! I am in research now! I hear you there! I wonder what I can add to the Assessment class. I read somewhere about the tools you needed to do the class, like a tuning fork, and an otoscope. Is there a way to do the class without it?

Hi RNtity,

Umm, not really. You have to say the results you find when you use those tools. I was lucky bec we have a friend who is a physician and i borrowed those things from him. A friend of mine ordered cheap versions from Amazon. I do know what you mean, though. Seems like a waste of money bec you will never use them again.

Assessment was a lot of writing. Just make sure you follow the directions for the written assignments and you will be fine. This class was like kindergarten compared to research. I just finished up vulnerable populations and I didn't think it was too bad either.

I'll be starting the class too. I am looking for my books now.

Do we need all of the books? Is the DVD helpful (if I rent, the DVD is not guaranteed)? What is the Nursing Bar-Chart Quick Study Series? I can't seem to find that specific one online.

Thanks for the help!

I posted this on the other thread, but I'll post it here too.

My advice is to follow the rubric to a T. Even if you feel like you are repeating things over and over in the assignment, DO IT. Also, you will need to pay attention to the smallest details and spell every little thing out...for example, you need to add "BPM" after the pulse, or "F" after temperature--fail to do so and you will lose points.

I never used the DVD. Unless they've changed the course since I last took it, the assignments do draw from the study guide so you will need to purchase/rent/borrow it.

You do need to buy/beg/borrow/steal (well, not steal) the fork, hammer and scope. Amazon is a good place to get all of this.

This class wasn't too bad. The assessments were more time-consuming than anything else.

I was going to ask about those tools required. Is there a way to do without buying an otoscope?

Are these the current books needed? I found a posted syllabus somewhere, not sure how up to date it is.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:

Required reading/materials:

1. Weber, J. & Kelley, J. (2010). Health assessment in nursing (4thed.). Philadelphia:

students have preferred hardcopy due to the nature of assignments in the

course***.

2. Weber, J., Kelley, J., & Sprengel, A. (2010). Lab manual to accompany health

assessment in nursing (4th ed.). Philadelphia: Lippincott.

3. Ackley, B.J. & Ladwig, G.B. (2014). Nursing diagnosis handbook: An evidence-based guide to

Not unless you lie on the assessments, and that's going down the academic dishonesty road.

You can get a cheap one on Amazon--they have one that you can get for $20 (The Dr. Mom one, though I've never used it so I can't attest to its quality. I just did a quick Amazon search for you).

Otherwise, see if you can borrow one from work or someone else who took the class.

I put out a request to borrow one on fb and got one. Thank you. It's a good thing to get more familiar with these objects.

Can I use Nursing Diagnosis Handbook 9th edition ? I had that for my previous classes. It says 10th is required for class.
