University of South Alabama Accelerated Nursing Program

Published

Hey everybody,

I am new to the forum and I just had a question about the University of South Alabama's accelerated nursing program. I am starting the accelerated program this July 2009 and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has completed USA's accelerated program, and, if so, what was it like and what should I prepare myself for? I will be attending the Springhill campus and I already have my B.S. in Biology. I would also like to know if there is anyone out ther planning to start the accelerated program @ USA this July as well?

prey-reqs is mainly what they look at in addition to work experience, etc......I had a 3.13 for pre-reqs and a 3.7 overall.........you should be fine and incidentally well prepared with your bio background...........

@ Coastie, yes i feel its hard cos its a lot of people applying for the same thing. And not only that, they have good GPAs like 4.0 and stuff. My overall undergrad GPA was only 3.08, but all my science classes were good so i beleive thats what helped in my case. No, am not committed to the MSN, from my understanding they don't process us for MSN until we are about to finish the BSN part. Hope this helps!!

@ Jennp, Thanks very much for the info...will hopefully get the packet by this weekend. Am from Atlanta, GA. Do u know of any good apartments around the springhill area??

The coordinator of the program is very nice and fair, you will get a lot from her lectures. But she is limited somewhat in her capabilities to change people's mentality, especially if you are not from the south. If you are you are almost going to be fine, depending on your ordinarity. if you are not, it doesn't matter if you are smart or not, do not expect much from clinicals unless if you are proficcient in licking some behinds. Clinical instructors do not really believe in smart people, but in numbers, there is certain numbers of a's, b' and c's they have to have. suck it up, take your boards, and move it on. Bite you tonge when you see that some of your classmates do not do anything and get high GPA, it is not quite in your control. Rememeber that the coordinator will prepare for your boards so well, after that move, MOVE OUT

GulfCoastie, what a fool, spent all the money for great course, go to PA, please, you will be disappointed, I got the same advice once, did not follow, what a fool I was with all those wonderful science courses... You are a smart person, but they will bring you down! And never even try to argue. They have great, great, great teaching phacility, as a PA you will thrive. Or at least take it and get out!

I appreciate your input. I had considered the PA program but I feel that nursing is the right place for me. I look forward to going the extra mile for my patients and giving them a fond memory of the care they received. I don't feel that I would have the one-on-one personal time if I were to pursue a PA degree. Nursing also seems to be the more flexible carrier out of the two options. I am limited by my husband's career as to where I might move and there are many more jobs available in nursing than for PA's. Ultimately, I would like to pursue a NP degree as well. And from what I'm seeing on job-search websites, NP's are recruited almost 2 to 1 over PAs in my area.

I'm sorry that you had such a rough time of it in this program. I've worked in consulting for the past two years so I am well versed in "licking some behinds" as you put it. I've heard from other nursing students (at other institutions) that it can be very competitive and that the instructors tend to make "pets" out of certain students. I suppose my best plan of attack is to become one of those pets! :lol2:

Gulf Coastie- Are you planning on attending USA for your ABSN? If so, are you going to the Fairhope campus for spring 2010?

I am planning on attending either USA or USM (Southern Miss) for an ABSN or traditional BSN. My first choice is USA beacuase a) its a shorter amount of time to be out of work, b) I'm only lacking only two of the pre-rec's for USA versus 5 for USM. I do have to take A & P I & II before I can apply. So I plan to apply for the summer term 2010 at the Mobile campus. I have a friend starting there this week and I hope that she'll give me the inside scoop on the program.

I too agree the absn at usa is attractive because of the length... I just sent my application and things off today? My gpa is average but everything is completed so I was glad for that. We'll see? I am also going to apply to MC in jackson my friend just finished there and speaks highly about the programs. MC is 14 months and starts in May? I am almost finished with that app too....but my first choice is def. USA. Keep me posted on your friend and if she likes it and what she thinks! I did look at southern but those pre-reqs are no fun.

Yeah the only benefit to USM is that they have a campus on the coast were my hubbie is. I'm not looking forward to being away for a year or more but I think it will help me stay focused on school.

I've heard good things about MC as well. Good luck with all your applying! Where did you go for undergrad?

I went to FSU but I am from Mississippi. I took the majority of my pre-reqs this summer and let me tell you it was intense and I hated being away from my boyfriend (he was working on the road) but I do think I did better with no distractions? I really don't know though. Btw, my friend took her A&P I and II all online and saih she learned lots? Don't think I could do that but she really liked them?

Hi Everyone,

By now you are all well into or have almost completed the USA Accelerated program. Do you recommend it? Would you do it again?

I am currently weighting all of my options and would so appreciate any input!!

Thanks in advance and congratulations!

:)

I am in the traditional program at south. However, I have heard that the accelerated program went too fast. Word is that you learn more with the traditional than with the accelerated. Good Luck!!! :)
