University of South Alabama Accelerated Nursing Program
Hey Stephanie, I've heard that the Fairhope campus is nice as well and from my understanding that particular campus has just renovated its nursing complex. But, I do know that the curriculum is the same for both campuses and is carried on at the same pace as the one on the university campus. I even believe that some of the nursing instructors are split between the two campuses. Fairhope is a nice, small town, I think you would enjoy it. When did you get your acceptance letter?

USA Hospitals
CocoChanel, I truly hope that you find something soon, one of my biggest fears is graduating and finding out that I can't find a job, that was one of the reasons I went into nursing. Hopefully the economy will pick up pretty soon and the hospitals will lift a lot of the freezes on hiring new nurses. Have you tried New Orleans? I know you would really hate to make that drive (2 hours from me here in Mobile), but if you could do like three days out of a week for like six months to a year MAYBE things will have picked up by then, that would be some really good experience and from what I hear if you can make it as a nurse in New Orleans YOU CAN MAKE IT ANYWHERE!!! I know several nurses who go down to New Orleans a few times out of the month to pick up some extra time. Just a thought, please let me know how your job search is going. Good Luck!!!!

USA Hospitals
Hey CocoChanel, I'm not a nurse yet, but I have worked at Women's and Children's Hospital as a student nurse and it seems like a really good place to work. They seem to really put a lot of effort into treating children, it is the only hospital in mobile that treats babies that are born high risk. They are also a part of the Children's Miracle Network which also put a lot of effort into Children's Care especially those with rare types of cancers. I think they usually start new nurses off at about $19 (and some change) they are second to Mobile Infirmary in starting pay for new nurses, but I don't think it's that much more. You may also want to try Mobile Infirmary also. I hope this helps!!! I was wondering, I know that some new nurses are having a hard time finding employment, is this the case with you? How long has it been since you graduated from nursing school. :redbeathe

Any 1 Year Accelerated BSN Students Out There?
Amen, all of our situations sound a lot alike. Unfortunately, I'm going to end up taking out more loans too. I graduated in 2007 with my biology degree which added up to not being much because I've never used it, but like saymo I was young and I didn't know what I wanted to do. I'm hoping that everything will work out with the accelerated program, I just can't wait for it to be over with!!! :heartbeat

Any 1 Year Accelerated BSN Students Out There?
Hey Saymo82, I'm about to start the accelerated BSN program this July at the University of South Alabama and I'm excited as well. I've talked to several people who have completed an accelerated program and they tell me that YES it is intense, but the pace of the course keeps you so busy that you really don't pay attention to the year passing right on by, I hope this is the case with me. The only problem that I have with the accelerated programs is that they really don't recommend you working and I'm really not in a position to not have a job especially with the current economy. What do you plan on doing as far as your finances go? What was your first degree in? How long have you been out of school? :heartbeat

What would you do?
Caliotter3, amen to that, you're right it would be crazy of me to wait and get my nursing degree based on the economy. I just hope that everything works out where I can find employment. Thanks! :heartbeat

What would you do?
With the current economy being such a wreck, there are a lot of hospitals across the U.S. that have put a freeze on hiring new nurses and a lot of new nurses are having a hard time finding jobs. With that being said, if you had the option of starting the nursing program in July 2009 or Jan. 2010, which semester would you choose. I was thinking that maybe by 2010 the economy would have picked up and hospitals will have resume hiring of new nurses, but I don't know, please help!!! :heartbeat

Job Outlook for New Nurses in Alabama
I know that with the current economy being in such a desperate state some hospitals have put up freezes on hiring new nurses. I was wondering if anyone knew if this has become the case in the Alabama area? If so, what parts of Alabama? Any comments would be greatly appreciated:typing

Is This A Good time to Start Nursing School
I just got accepted to an accelerated nursing program that starts this fall of 2009. I already have my Bachelor's degree in Biology. I contacted the director of the nursing program and she stated that most students do not work during the accelerated nursing program because it's such a rigorous program. I currently have an 8-5 job that has absolutely nothing to do with my degree, but it is some income coming in at this time, and I know that if I go to nursing school I would have to quit. My question is- would it be smart to quit my job during these desperate economic times to start nursing school? I also wanted to know how is the job outlook for new nurses during these economic times? I really want to be a nurse, I knew before I got my biology degree, but when I decided to do nursing I only had one semester left to complete my biology degree. Please help I just don't know what to do. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.:wink2:
