U.S.A. California

Hello !

Is any one applying for this fall 2020 Cohort? OC location the deadline is April 15th 2020.

@ KatherineAudrianna-FutureRN CONGRATS to submitting your application! I am sure we all will be accepted! This pandemic will not stand in the way! I am glad you chose a great username! ?

@GratefulFutureNurse I went to my local community colleges completed courses there. Received an Associates Degree, pursued my BS in Health Science, emphasis in patent care. 'Grand Canyon University'. USF is also my top choice. The other programs are next year. I want to start as soon as possible.

@Sdnursinggirl619 WOW! that is amazing you are in the South Bay area USF will be perfect! I am in the San Fernando Valley area. But I will relocate to be closer to school. University of Hawaii was beautiful, I would not mind going to school in Hawaii.

@PagingNurseTerri Those are some great schools! I was looking at Charles Drew for some time, but was nervous about taking the HESI. I definitely think direct entry MSN programs are the way to go b/c I think eventually (10-30 years from now?) they'll want all their nurses with BSNs to get an MSN (kind of like many hospitals did with pushing their nurses with ADNs to get their BSN). Since you're looking at UCLA (which has biochemistry as a prerequisite), I would also look into Azusa Pacific Uni! I initially wanted to apply, but I avoided biochem like the plague, which they require!

@Grateful Nurse Thank you so much! Some schools are waiving the HESI/TEAS due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Which works in my favor to be honest. I need to confirm if Charles Drew will be waiving the exam(s) as well. Yes MSN is the way to go because you can go in so many directions! Management, NP, or stay at the bedside. I agree as time goes in hospitals will require a Masters. At this point the ADN is some what obsolete you can’t work in any hospitals. Some are sending their nurses back to school for their BSN. Yes, UCLA does require Bio Chem I took it last semester I got an “C” and that was hard. I was so stressed. It was the worst I’m not sure how I made it out that class. I’m a little worried because you need a min letter grade “B”. But hey I’m still applying !!

@PagingNurseTerri Yes! My mom had her ADN, but was required to go back to school to get her BSN (the hospital she worked at generously payed for it!), so sometimes I wonder whether getting a BSN, then getting an MSN (if the place I work at would have a similar option to pay for the MSN tuition) would be a better option cost-wise. But after weighing my options, I think going straight to MSN is the better choice. By the way, how are you planning on covering tuition? I have some money I've saved up (since my parents were kind enough to let me live with them for very low rent), but it's barely anything compared to the $100k tuition). My plan for additional money was to apply to as many scholarships as possible, take out some Grad PLUS Loans, find a rich family member (joking! ?), work during semester 3 & 4, and to find work at a place that has tuition reimbursement/repayment (or maybe it's called loan forgiveness?) once I get my MSN.

A "C" in Biochem is a great feat! Biochem is tough! And absolutely still apply! The worst they can say is no, but there is still a good possibility they can say yes. You'll never know unless you try, right!

@Grateful Nurse WOW! that was wonderful that you mom's job paid for it. Some hospitals will hire you with your ADN, but will give you X amount of time to get your BSN. I feel the BSN would be more cost effective depending where you apply. Some programs offer an Accelerated BSN program. Most MSN programs are about $100k ?. I agree MSN is definitely a great option! That is so good you have some savings for school. Well I will be depending on FASFA if the school allows it, and LOANS. I am not sure if Grad School takes FASFA?

I am currently working for a hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, they will pay 5k per year. So, that will take off 10k which is better than nothing. I do hope I can get some scholarships as well. Maybe I can write Ellen DeGeneres, and get help! I am so serious. ? I do plan on still working. I have a flexible schedule I work 3 days 12hrs. I may change my schedule and work the weekends only.

I think you can find a very generous Rich family ! LOL Hey we can't be choosey!

Thank you! BioChem was no JOKE! I had a migraine every single day. So, I proudly take my "C". The worst I can hear is NO, but it is worth a try. I make up in other areas.?

@PagingNurseTerri Definitely! It opened my eyes to different ways to pay for school. And I have just started looking into Accelerated BSN programs!

Yes, they thankfully do take FAFSA! Here’s a helpful link I found: https://www.usfca.edu/nursing/programs/graduate/masters/MSN/financing-and-aid

And it’s great that your employer is willing to pitch in! It must feel good to know that they really believe in you! Are you planning on staying with them once you finish the MSN program?

Trying to manifest this generous family member and Ellen DeGENEROUS reaching out to us as I type! ?

I can imagine! I’ve heard horror stories about biochem! But yes, I’m sure they will see how much you shine in other areas!

@Grateful Nurse That’s great you started looking into Accelerated BSN programs. It’s definitely worth a shot.

oh great Thank you ! I’m glad they take FASFA!

Yes, I am very grateful for my employer. That is one reason why I want to go to school locally. Although, I’m considering out of state schools, it will be more feasible I stay in Los Angeles. Once I’m done with school I have a guaranteed job in Neonatal ICU. I will just promote to RN. Ultimately, I would like to become a Neonatal Nurse practitioner.

I agree, although MSN would be my preferred route, I want to keep my options open.

It’s great that you have a job lined up for once you’re done with nursing school! I would be super proud of myself if I was in your spot and I’m sure you’ll be a fantastic Neonatal NP!! Are you planning on going straight into an NP program after you finish your MSN or working as an RN first?
