LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A new summer camp at UNLV's nursing program aims to grow the next generation of nurses.

It's a 5-day experience dedicated to exposing the young people in the Las Vegas valley to the real life of a nurse.

In an effort to encourage and foster junior and senior high school students interested in a nursing career, the University of Nevada Las Vegas launched the first week-long Nurse Camp last week. To help students develop realistic expectations about nursing school and a career in nursing, various topics and activities covered included:

  • CPR & First Aid Training
  • UNLV Admissions ACT Prep
  • Simulation Skills Training
  • Shadowing a nurse
  • Stop the Bleed training course
  • Roundtable Q&A with nurses

If interested in enrolling in next year's camp, you can find more information here.

This program was developed in an effort to help address the nursing shortage that is occurring in many areas of the country and will continue to spread in the coming years. What are other ways that nursing program or health systems are implementing to help promote nursing as a career to high school students? Is your area experiencing a nursing shortage?

Way back in the dark ages I took a full semester course in high school called Health Care Careers or something like that. Keep in mind this was probably 1981 or 1982 so I may be off on the exact name. I figured back then it would be a fluff class good for an easy A and I was right. It didn't help much for recruiting nurses as I recall, I didn't enter nursing until many years after high school and it doesn't stick out in my memory that anybody in that class went right into the health care field after high school. Point is this idea is nothing new!

Wow that's cool, I wish there was something like this when I was in high school.
