Hello all,

I am interested to hear about any personal thoughts, opinions, and experiences regarding the University of Chicago Medical Center. Open to all, but anything about the ER and the ICUs would be great!

Thanks ahead of time!

I actually asked someone I met who had left one of those units. I commented that they were supposed to have a good program and that person replied, "yeah, not so much". This person had left there and just started a new job somewhere else, and was a not so new nurse.

I've worked there and I don't think it is that great of a hospital for nurses. I didn't do ICU or ER. On the particular floor I worked on communication between many MDs and RNs were very poor. An issue that was frequently brought up and nothing was done about it. As far as I'm concerned we're all part of one team and should be working together. There were many disgruntled nurses working there. It was terrible when you tried to transfer a patient to the ICU. Bottom line is when a patient requires a higher level of nursing care stepdown or ICU is where they should be transferred. Unless it was a particular medication that could only be given in ICU they generally stayed on the floor. I've had visitors tell me some of these patients look like they belong in the ICU - that's pretty darn sad. Some docs have even told us that we were running a mini ICU on our unit. They have a new union - NNU. The previous union (INA) was recently voted out. Not sure yet how the new union will be.

Positive things about the hospital are they pay 100% for nurses to go back to school. However, if it exceeds a certain dollar amount that is considered taxable income so it doesn't really come out to be 100%. There are usually good ratios compared to other hospitals. That may be because it is a teaching facility and the fact that the hospital is union.

I am a nurse there now in an ICU. I very much enjoy the medical center and do not feel that I have an issue with MD communication at all. I also do not have an issue with management communication. I have less than 1 year there - and get all of my days that I want off (most all of the time) and enjoy working there. The new union is there - but nothing so far has changed regarding current conditions. More to come on that I am sure. I have only worked on an ICU there - so I don't know about the floors or the tele floors. But when we are full, we are full. Not sure how any hospital gets around that. I do feel that I get a lot of face time with attendings and that they value the thoughts of the nurses. But that may just be me. Good luck!

Hello Livingthedream,

As a new grad nurse, I just would like to know if they are hiring at this time. I have put in several applications, but have not received any communication back from them as of yet. Any advice on how to obtain employment would be appreciated. Also, is your BSN required? Thanks in advance.

I don't work in HR. So if there are jobs posted, then they are hiring. I was very persistent about wanting to work there - calling and such. There is a nurse that I know that is ADN, but I only know one. She was hired when I was, last year.

Good luck!

Do you know what their starting base pay for new nurse is like?

I am very interested in working at U of C as well...
