University of Calgary January 2019

Hello, future nurses!

I'm a current U of C student who applied through the degree holder route. I'll be graduating at the end of this year. Please feel free to post any questions here!

Another round of applications is starting soon for the January 2019 intake of Transfer and/or Degree Holder students. Here's the U of C page for their info:

One of the most common questions is whether the courses you have taken meet the faculty's pre-requisites. The best way to be sure is to email a screenshot of your transcript to [email protected] and ask if you are missing anything.

Important note! As of 2019, the faculty is changing the schedule for the summer terms.

"We will compress all courses in Term 4 and Term 7 to be offered over a 9-week period from late April to the end of June. The result would be an intense spring term, but students would have no scheduled nursing courses during July and August."

While having 2 months off sounds great for some, it causes trouble for others (student loans, jobs, child care etc.). Please be aware of this change before applying.

Best of luck!

Hi! Meant to post an update but have been busy.
Was accepted off wait list last week!
I hope you hear something soon if you are still waiting ?

wow congratulations!

I think I am 3.59 if I calculate correct. I should probably call them and see there I am

I was on the waitlist but got acceptance mail on Saturday. I think they are working down the list. You will hear from them soon.

Congratulations! May I know your GPA?

I think my gpa was 3.68 for degree.

Congrats to all who have been accepted. For those waiting, don't lose hope. I got in last year as a degree holder with a GPA of 3.6 something and I am currently in the "almighty" Term 5 (honestly, begin now to prepare for Term 5. It is no joke). I wish you all best of luck and let me know how I can be of help while you wait, and while you prepare for the program.

Cheers!

Hello,

I am currently a high school student in Manitoba, and I want to apply for direct entry into the nursing program. Do you know how difficult it is to get accepted? Or how competitive? What my GPA should be at?

Thanks!

Hi. My sister is currently in a high school in Manitoba as well and the advisors said that the competitive average is about 86%. So that is in the high 80’s. If you have an average in the high 80’s I believe you would be fine. In other time calculate your gpa, you need to take an average of your pre calculus, chemistry, biology, English and one other approved grade 12 course.

Hello,

I am hoping someone who is currently in or has taken the degree holders route could give me some insight into the program. I received an admission offer for Jan 2020 start today but am torn on whether to accept as I will be a first time mom to a 4 month old when the program starts.

Would anyone be able to give me an idea of a weekly schedule for classes and clinical? Are there any mothers with small babies at home currently doing this program?

Any help and advice would be immensely appreciated!

Hi goalie,

I just finished term 5 of the degree holders program. Term 3 and 4 (first two semesters) aren't bad at all but term 5 was extremely time consuming and challenging. I think it depends on how much support you have/how efficient you can be.

Also for term 3 and 4 I'm pretty sure everyone had a free day in their schedule plus the weekend. Term 5 I did not have a free day, but I have Fridays off again in term 6.

Hello Goalie,

Congratulations on getting in. I just finished term 3 and I am a mum of 3 (10,5, 3 years). I think you can do this, only, you will need to plan your time effectively.

Classes are not too heavy, and depending on what clinical community group you fall into (blue or green), you will have one whole day off school. Usually Monday or Thursday. Giving you the weekends and an extra day to catch up.

It will also be a very good idea to plan for support and child care especially with your baby, because you are not allowed to miss classes.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

All the best.

Hello!

i was hoping to get insight into some of the degrees people have applied with? I have a bachelors in child and youth care that I did accelerated at UVic with a social work diploma!

thank you kindly and congrats to everyone who got in!! I am hoping for a January 2021 admission ☺️

In my class, we have various degrees: mathematics, psychology, kinesiology, medicine, health sciences, micro biology and so on. I think any degree is fine once you have the prerequisite courses.

Hi. I plan on applying through the transfer route the the UofC I was wondering if anyone knows how the gpa for nursing is being calculated and also, why is the minimum gpa that is accepted for fall. Thanks

Hi. Please for those that did their prerequisites with Athabasca university, which exact courses did you take for Arts and English Language. I need to urgently register for those two. Thanks
