I am entering the University of South Alabama's BSN to DNP program in the Spring 2011 class and starting the Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program and I was wondering if there is anyone out there who has experience with this program? Any information at all would be helpful!

Sincerely,

Jay

I too am interested. Are you doing the online program? Do they consider distance learning in or out of state tuition? Thanks!

It is all online with a session on campus once per year of 3-5 days, and clinical and residency experiences established in your area. Everyone in the distance nursing programs pays the "Web" tuition, and it is very reasonable. Less than what I was paying for in-state tuition at the University of Texas at Arlington.

I'm applying for Fall 2011. How was the application process for you?

I am interested in the MSN to DNP program also. Do you know if this university requires the GRE?

Hello JayMH1984,

I am starting this spring (2011) at University of South Alabama as well for my BSN-DNP in the Family psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program. We are sort of in the same boat, I am looking for some info from someone with experience in my program or the school. Good to know you are out there. :D

I am a student from the fall 2010 class ENP dual AACNP/FNP program. The program is hard but doable. USA does not require the GRE. I work full time weekends and carried a full load last semester. I complained and cried a little but hey I did that in BSN school as well. The orientation you will like. It is a great networking experience but has more of a leadership feel to it not your traditional Under Grad orientation. You will do a lot of self learning but the instructors I found to be very reasonable and will to work with you if you open your mouth and ask. If you have any other questions I can aswer please let me know.

Hello,

I am a nurse practitioner working in acute care. I was wondering if anyone knew how many applicants the MSN to DNP program at USA usually had and what the residency component involved. There does not appear to be a major project is the residency in lieu of this?

criticalcare rn - I am not sure about the amount of applicants for the MSN to DNP program, but I can tell you that the residency is 540 clinical hours divided into the 3 final semesters of the program that are dedicated to a major doctoral project in your area of specialty practice.

I think I tried to reply on an earlier thread but this is my first time replying on allnurses so who knows if it went through...my apologies if you get this twice!

I start the ENP program at USA in Aug. I asked the program managers if they could hook us up with current/previous students for questions, but no luck. Anyways, one big question I have is the books. I have been looking at the required books list and am wondering what your experience has been...do you need to buy all the books?? any recommendations so far which ones are really "required"?? Also, how many hours are you taking a semester?? When I talked to the advisor, she said she really only recommends people take 2 classes a semester. I will be working full time at least through the first two semesters and am curious how you find the case load. Of course I would like to finish it ASAP but is that really doable?? Thank you in advance and hope you are finding your studies challenging and rewarding!

Hi Lisa - I am in my 2nd semester of the BSN to DNP program, and so far, I feel that I have gotten a lot of use out of the required book on the book list. I have not purchased anything from the "recommended" book list, but I can tell you that I have had some friends that have done so and have said that it is a lot of expense for something that they are not using... so I would say to get the required books only... Trust me, they are enough! Haha. I am working full time while taking two courses at a time, and it is do-able, you just really have to be disciplined and schedule study, reading, and writing time. It can be a lot of work at times, but if you spread it out, it is manageable. It is definitely challenging and rewarding, the professors in the DNP program at USA thus far have been great.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Sincerely,

Jay H., RN, BSN, CCRN, CPEN

Thanks for the feedback. It's much appreciated! Good luck in your studies!
