I just got accepted to start at the University of Pittsburgh this August. Anyones else starting then?
I live about an hour north of the city and it is really cheap living. Taxes are really low compared to Allegheny county. I guess it depends on if you are alone, have a family or a spouse that needs to live near a job, or other circumstances. Do you plan to rent or buy is another big factor. I can only tell you of a few places in the city that are dangerous. Sorry, I am just not that much help on this topic. If you want to move to Butler I am here to help!
What areas should I avoid?
I have been looking on Craigslist for places to live and it seems like extremely few of the places near the university allow pets. I have a little dog that will be assisting me in my studies but it seems no one wants to welcome him, lol. Do you think it would be reasonable to live about 8 miles away from school? Is traffic a huge issue? Is there a place to park my car near the school?
Lol, sorry for all the questions but I appreciate any help :)
Eight miles is not bad, maybe even close to a bus route.
Try to avoid places like Wilkinsburg, and south Oakland. There is parking a few blocks from the school that is not too bad, but parking in the Presby garage is close and expensive. I do not know how much a monthly pass would be. Hopefully student services will have info for us on things like that.
I don't really think that the times we will be going to class will have traffic problems. Keep in mind that there are many clinical sites so just because you go to Pitt for class, clinical may be somewhere else. So you may be eight miles from class but 30 miles from clinical. I think a lot of people live in the North Hills area. Try looking into that.
Good luck. I hope you get here and settled ASAP.
I wish I could be of more assistance...
Hi. Congrats to everybody. I am currently a Pitt student and love it.
If you have the opportunity to take some classes- take some. It does lighten the load significantly- especially when you get to the second semester and have 3 day/ week clinicals. To be honest- some of the classes are just busy work crap that you don't want to bother with when studying for Advanced Patho or something.
Gilli- As far as Typhon- it does not work with Iphone ( I have one). You could do it through the internet but not a direct app
Thanks for the info. I had planned to take three classes over the summer, but maybe taking four and getting patho out of the way would be better. What do you think?
Can you please tell me more about the iPhone? Do you love it? Do you use typhon through the internet? Are there many other things you use it for? I have sooo many questions about it and just don't know what to do.
I can't PM yet, so thanks again for the info.

Did you interview the 11th in the afternoon? Do you have a place to live yet? Good luck with the move! I hope you are ready for cold, dreary weather. Although, you might not even notice since we will be so busy!
