Unit Clerk Question

I recently came across an ad at a local hospital seeking a unit clerk for a parttime night position. I applied but they told me they had already filled the position. I am just curious what exactly they're looking for in a unit clerk. I'm finishing up some prereqs for a nursing program which I should get into fairly easily if I keep my grades good (according to the director). But I want some floor experience to make sure this is for me so I don't drop out a few semesters in and take the spot of someone who would have stayed with the program.

I've got about 3 years experience as a part time secretary and have been a waitress on the side. I've taken medical terminology 1 and 2, have CPR and first aid, though CPR does need to be renewed soon. I'm very organized and work well with others and can keep up with the quick pace. What exactly are they looking for? Thanks.

You certainly sound qualified to me....if you don't get that job, have you considered working as a nurse aide so you can get experience on the floor?

I have considered that but I am not certified as a CNA. There's a class at the community college I want to take this summer to become certified, but was hoping for a job before the end of summer. And most CNA programs are difficult to get into around here. I've emailed several people off of the Oregon state board of nursing website who run CNA training but have yet to hear back from any of them. I guess I'm just frustrated :o

The unit clerk functions as the secretary for the unit, transcribing physician orders, putting orders in the computer for stat laboratory/x-ray procedures, etc., keeps the desk running smoothly, the right arm of the charge nurse, so to speak.

Check with some of the nursing homes in your area. They usually have frequent CNA courses.
