Hi allnurses,
I'm a future BSN in my LPN phase right now, and I was hoping to move into a hospice area of nursing. I'm doing a quick paper on my opinions of hospice nursing and I was wondering if anyone would be able to answer a couple of questions for me?
1) What are the rewards of working as a hospice nurse?
2) What is a typical work day as a hospice nurse?3) Where do you get support from?
4) How do you keep from being overwhelmed when you work with dying patients everyday?
5) What made you choose the hospice field?
I know they seem simple, but I would really appreciate any answers! Thanks for looking, and thanks for nursing! :redbeathe

1) What are the rewards of working as a hospice nurse? Helping pts and families accept the approaching death, assisting w/ pain/symptom management.
2) What is a typical work day as a hospice nurse? I see only nsg home pts. Do a head to toe assessment, make sure the pt is comfortable and symptom free, check chart for new orders, fax any new orders to my office, call the family to give report, report to facility nurse, document nn.
3) Where do you get support from? co-workers, MSW
4) How do you keep from being overwhelmed when you work with dying patients everyday? Knowing I'm keeping my pt comfortable, making their last days/weeks enjoyable.
5) What made you choose the hospice field? Being able to spend quality time w/ my pts instead of pushing a med cart all shift long.
Hope this helps.
