Uni of melbourne , job after graduation

Published

I have been accepted into studying at university of melbourne.

Is it easy to get employment straight after graduation ? Or do employers prefer those with working experience ?

Do we need internship after graduation ?

congratulations! i hope you enjoy the experience :)

"to consolidate education and clinical practice a graduate nurse program is recommended for new graduates." (victorian state government nursing website - see http://www.health.vic.gov.au/nursing/furthering/graduate.htm for more information).

in australia, newly-registered nurses have the option of participating in a graduate nurse program (gnp), which is not dissimilar to an internship. they vary from hospital to hospital: some offer a range of experiences with two or three rotations (the royal eye and ear has four rotations) to different wards and departments, while others consolidate the graduate experience with one twelve month placement. in all the programs there is a period of supernumeracy, study days and sessions, mentorship or preceptorship, and ongoing appraisal. there are approximately 1700 places available annually. gnps are offered at both public and private hospitals.

selection to some programs or areas of specialty can be highly competitive. the decision is made by a number of factors, including: student preference; recent clinical reports, academic results, cv and (if short listed) interview.

every year there's a nursing expo for students, particularly targeted at final year students. many hospitals have booths and representatives, to answer questions about specialties, programs, and other advantages to undertaking a gnp there. hospitals participating in computer matching also provide information annually to the postgraduate medical council of victoria (who perform the matching) - this information is provided in the computer match handbook.

for a variety of reasons, not all nurses choose to participate in a gnp. many programs do not allow participants to work part time, for example. also, there are not always enough places for all eligible applicants. nurses who have graduated are eligible for registration without participation in a gnp. however, successfully completing a gnp significantly consolidates knowledge and develops skills, as well as providing a more supportive environment than a new nurse is likely to find otherwise. participating in a gnp does not guarantee continuing employment at the hospital.

Glad I could help :)

You would have to try very hard NOT to get a job, there is a nursing shortage. Working (eg. as a nursing aide) during the RN course does tend to help you to cope when you get out of school though; the time management and people skills as well as some common sense.

Is it easy to get a nursing aide job while we are studying in Melbourne university ? How much is the salary per hour ?

What is a nursing aide job anyway ?

Exactly what it says, aiding the nurses. Eg. nursing home etc. MAyn names for it - personal care assistant etc. check out a job website or aged care facilities. Yes, it is easy to get a job in this area. Pay varies, check online. It is several years since I did it.
