Understanding limited DNR

Specialties Geriatric

Published

This is my 1st month in LTC.

Today I saw a resident form marked for a limited DNR.

I cant wrap my mind around what I am suppose to be doing for a limited DNR while waiting for an ambulance in an emergency.

My orienter said I shouldnt resusitate but can do wink wink "sternal rub". I am not understanding the concept of limited DNR.

Does anyone have any experience with Limited DNR cases, what did you do?

thanks

We have DNR or Full code...none of this 'it's okay to bag me but don't do compressions. It's okay to give me meds but no compressions." People...this is long term care...about all we can do during a code is chest compressions and 02 via ambu.

Whoever says a sternal rub is something you shouldnt do...seriously??? Your more worried about bruising a pt than checking if they are concious? wow...

Whoever said a sternal rub shouldnt be done...seriouslly??? your more worried about bruising than checking to see if your pt is concious??? wow

We were told during Nursing school that sternal rubbing was only to be done by a doctor and ONLY if necessary aka the patient wasnt responding to any other stimuli... dont know if times have changed and my instructors were wrong or not though....

HOWEVER, I have seen it done, once was by a nurse manager of ICU/PCU and another time was by a doctor during a code on an orthopedic floor
