I am waiting to hear back for Spring 2010 admission to UNC-Chapel Hill and got an email that there is a new earlier deadline for the May 2010 entry- December 22, 2009. So depressing to already get re-applying info when you haven't heard back yet. Why, oh why is this school not easier to get into?
The email said Spring 2010 applicants would hear toward mid-November. This sounds like an unbelievably short amount of time to accept their offer and line up financial aid. I have been accepted at Duke and have to line up loans for that if Carolina doesn't offer me admission. I hope one month is enough time.
Thanks guys! I am sure you will get your letters next week! I forgot to mention that I live in Raleigh which probably explains why I got it to soon. You can tell as soon as you look in your mailbox- small envelope, but slightly thicker because of the compliance requirements (i.e. immunizations, CPR, etc) are stuffed in there too. :) Everyone has to attend a mandatory pre-orientation session but they give you four dates (different time periods) to choose from. Can't wait to meet you guys- from what I understand ABSN and BSN have several classes in common!
I am going to accept the offer at UNC. I really loved the Duke program, but the upfront cost (until repayment kicks in) is a lot to swing in the meantime. My main reason is that I want to keep the possibility of going full time to a nurse anesthesia graduate program in the near future open and I think paying on private loans while I attend would be a hardship. Not to mention that the interest rates available on private loans right now are higher with the economy...
The Duke program is indeed great. I have several friends there right now and, although it is tough, the program is preparing them well. However, the cost involved is immense. Even with ancillary scholarships, you must have large financial reserves available or the metal to deal with the overwhelming loan repayment in the end. At my age, the cost of attending alone is cost prohibitive compared to other institutions. If I were twenty, maybe a different story.
UNC-CH will be excellent. They prep you continuously for the NCCLEX by constructing all their exams in the same fashion as the licensing exam. This way, you are accustomed to it well before you actually take it.
Congrats again, momofthreeboys. I hope the letters for the BSN are being sent out just a bit later than the ABSN letters. Else I will be stressed for the next week or so. I sure wish I knew the outcome right now. It makes concentrating on work and school a challenge right now. I am both excited and worried, but that's normal I guess. We will keep our fingers crossed.
I live in Cary so it should not take long in the mail. I have a two-day nursing class on Friday and Saturday for Wake Tech so it would be great if I got an acceptance letter before then so that I won't have to go. Also I want the alternate to be able to take my place. Good tip about the envelope thickness. I'll know soon as I pick it up! I look forward to meeting the two of you as well!
NYCGyrl, I just received word last night another friend of mine was accepted into the ABSN program. Hopefully, that indicates that the ABSN notifications were sent out before the BSN notifications. Again, we'll just wait and see.
I'll report back when I hear something about mine and, of course, if I hear anyone else receiving notifications... both ABSN & BSN.
Hey Carolina11-
I definitely lost sleep over the Carolina v. Duke situation! The total cost difference is going to be incredibly different for everyone- it will be dependent on what scholarship you get (or don't get) at Duke, how much financial aid you need, and most importantly what private loan you can get. If for example you needed the full amount of aid at Duke for just the first year- you would be looking at $12,500 in Stafford loans and a $30,000 private loan. This doesn't include the second year which I guess would be similar. Even though you are looking at a 49K payback- this is taxed and your loans will be accruing interest the entire time. I think paying for the program is so dependent on where you are in life, how much you need to take out for the program, and grad school plans. Feel free to pm to talk about the decision more! I labored over it for 6 months. But remember it is a win-win.

Long-time reader, first time posting. :)
Congratulations, momofthreeboys. I know of someone that received their letter on Saturday confirming an offer to the nursing program there. They, too, applied to the ABSN program.
NYCGyrl, I applied to the regular two-year program, not the ABSN. I have not received a reply yet. So, maybe that helps put some anxiety to rest. From what I understand, all applicants should receive their reply by next week, depending on where you are in the country. It could mean that if UNC does not send out letters for the BSN applicants till Monday, if you live across country, it may not be till the following week you get notified.
I do know that the first words on the acceptance letter is "Congratulations!" Hope yours, and mine, says that too.
Enjoy the program, momofthreeboys! And get started on the immunizations right away, if you haven't already.
