Unassigned Epi Policy

Specialties School

We're working on putting this policy in place in our district...IF we can ever get a MD to sign off on it for us. I'd like to get input from you guys, who already have this program, regarding your procedure for after school activities, "home" and "away" events, and for bus transportation to and from school.

Thanks!!

We have stock epi-pens in the clinic and with the AED. These do NOT go on field trips. The student's epi-pen that is kept at school (provided there is one!) and a copy of the doctor's order goes on the field trip.

All teachers, paras, etc. are trained to administer and call 911.

This for me.

However, in my state, I cannot delegate Epi to anyone for an undiagnosed allergy. That can only be given by a RN with assessment. Diagnosed allergy, I delegate. Hence why my stock-epi stays with me in my office. I try my very, very best to get a back-up field trip only Epi pen for students with severe allergies that I can pack and delegate.

But I also work on students with severe allergies carrying their own, both in school and during all other life activities. But I work with older students. I get it is different in the elementary nursing world. However, never too early to teach a student how to operate on Epi-pen if they may need one :).

(Side note: This is part of my prepping students to manage their own health care for the real world. This year, one of my students with a peanut-allergy given themselves an Epi pen. While I am not happy Epi was needed at all, I was also proud this student was able to do this - something this student and I had been working towards for the past 4 years.)
