After reading several threads related to job markets being oversaturated with new grads + weak economy leading to a lack of jobs, the first thought that comes to my mind is....."Well move already!" The program that I am completing is in a rural area, hours away from the city and many of my classmates are away from their families during the week, and go home on the weekends and that has been the case for the last 19 months.

I'm just curious as to what is stopping some new grads from temporarily relocating?

nothing, but what i've met with (currently I hold a license in CA) is that other states are reluctant to bring in people from out of state because "they want to hire nurses from their local schools". I know this isn't the case everywhere, seems like a lot of people on this board do find jobs out of state no problem. Just from my experience, hospitals would rather keep it local.

Not sure. Probably lots of reasons. Families, childcare issues, spouse/partner's jobs, mortgages, kids, schools, money, etc... The reasons are highly individual and for some, it's just not a feasible option, and I respect that.

However, I highly recommend new grads being open to relocation. It just might open that door and give you that first opportunity. Especially if you are currently living in an area heavily saturated by nursing applicants.

I feel like I'm being held captive.

It would be easy for me to relocate if I didn't own a house that has depreciated in value since I bought it.

Iam ready and willing to relocate my bags were packed in December 2009. I haven't found the right person willing to hire me from out of state. I live in CT.
