Hello Everyone,
Thank you so much for reading. I would like to know if anyone is Alumni of UMET, if so have you had any issues working as an R.N in the states. Were you able to transfer your license to other states and start working without any issues? Were clinicals an issue while you were there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am in the process of applying and have read some reviews about graduates having issues getting work in the states due to clinicals? Not sure why. However would like to do my research first. Thanks so much for your help. :)
God Bless

Hey! I'm an UMET alumni. I graduated last year August and passed my boards on my first attempt October 3. I went through Wisconsin because it was a easier process and I just got it endorsed by Florida. It is hard for new grads in general no matter were you studied to get a job. I have experience in a residency I did at the VA in Puerto Rico and it took me a while to land a job. I was recently selected for the versant new grad residency program for baptist hospital in Miami. I start now in march and my clinical hours have never been an issue. The job market is different in each state for new grads but many are struggling.
Hi Jen,
Thanks for responding. I have read many of your posts and have found them very helpful so thanks for that. Now when you say you passed the boards you mean the NCLEX or PR Boards? I know FL has an agreement with PR but I am planning on transferring my license to Texas so I just wanted to make sure it wouldnt be an issue. Also, when you say you did it through Wisconsin, can you choose which state u want to be licensed from? (just a little confused with how that works) Also, CONGRATS on the residency, thats wonderful and Im sure you will be a great nurse. Any other tips for UMET and how was your expereince there. Thanks so much for your help. :)
Thank you!
I passed my nclex exam I didn't even bother with pr boards to be honest. Well fl sees pr as international so the process to get license is a lot longer. Wisconsin doesn't see pr as international so you can get permission to test a lot sooner. My friend just transferred his license from Wisconsin to Texas and found a job really quick. Texas is apparently new grad friendly. I took my nclex in fl for Wisconsin.
Umet was interesting. I had a good time but my suggestion is to do a lot of self study. A few of the professors I had left so I don't know much about the new ones since my last semester I took all my classes on Spanish to graduate sooner.
wow that sounds great. I didnt know you could choose which state you get the licsense from. I have heard of many students doing it thru Wisconsin. That sounds like a quicker process. That was my only worry was not being able to take the NCLEX (people post all types of scary stories on here..LOL) im def excited about applying to UMET and I like their flexible admisison policy. May I ask how long did it take you to get permission to take NCLEX and how long to get your actual license? Thanks so much :)
I Sent the application around may/June. ....As soon as I finished my program I sent the certification of graduation. That was end of July beginning of August and by mid august I was able to choose my test date. I originally had it for September 16 but my ATT and license name didn't match since I was born pr I have both my parents last names even though I went through my whole educational degrees with one last name. Make sur when you send the documents and sign up for the test that your names match! Lol i had to repay for the test and take it two weeks later
thats not bad, pretty quick. do you feel UMET prepared you for the NCLEX? Also, where did you do your clinicals in PR? How was the clinical experience and do you feel the professors and staff were supportive? Ok, no more questions, dont wanna bug you too much..LOL Would def love to keep in touch to pick your brain. You can email me (hmendez81 at gmail) Again thank you for answering all my questions. I will keep in touch, im sure I will have more questions for u.
To be honest I didn't feel like they prepared me but they have changed a lot so the cohort behind me is probably more prepared. I did the Hurst review and it was in my opinion the best review I came across. My clinical were at the VA and the local hospitals. It's very different than the states so be prepared to be shocked at least in the private and local hospitals. Don't learn their bad habits.
thanks for being honest. thats a little scary that you didnt feel prepared for the exam, i guess every school is different. As far as clinicals, do you feel you learned and left really feeling prepared to practice nursing? What was your experience with clinicals? (u mentioned be prepared for shock so im curious. LOL) :)
thanks again
Well the best clinical I had were at the va. It's a teaching hospital and the nurses enjoy teaching. The local ones it depends which one you have. I went to Hermanos Melendez and hated it. They were so unprofessional and didn't follow your typical nursing protocol. I hope you can avoid that hospital. Idk how well la inter students are feeling about the nclex but most take Kaplan or study from Saunders.
I see. I can imagine how terrible to be stuck doing clinicals with people like that. But atleast u made it and now youre all done, so thats great. Im trying to keep my options open and apply to schools in Texas as well, hopefully I will get in. dying to be done with these pre-req's already.LOL. im sure u remember that feeling. Hope the residency program goes great, i think thats a really good route to go as a new grad. keep me posted on your expereince. and thank u for all your help and advice, truly appreciate it.

This is so great to read all of y'all experiences. I went to college at la inter., and I don't feel like they prepare you for the nclex what so ever. I've taken the nclex four times and no luck. I just paid to register again. Btw in the state of New York...I'm really loosing hope, and I'm just tired and scared. I tried a few reviews, last one being kaplan...im considering hurst...good luck to all
