Umbilical cord care

Published

Hi! I'm revising policies and we are still using alcohol on our cords. I've heard that a lot of places now are not doing this. What are you all doing? Does anybody have a link to the research that supports not using alcohol anymore?

I am a new grad nurse with two kids born in 01 and 03. When I was discharged with my kids I was not taught to use alcohol (from two different hospitals), plus all of the hospitals that I have had rotations in for OB do not use alcohol. I live in Portland, OR.

Forgot to say that I also tell them that if it gets poop or pee on it, to wash it with some warm soapy water, rinse and then let it dry thoroughly. Mainly I tell them to keep it dry and clean and to report any redness, swelling, bleeding or discharge to the pediatrician.
