After following the Fall '09 thread with great interest, I thought it might be time to start a new thread for the Spring '10 applicants since we're inching closer to the Sep 1 deadline. I have a technical question for those who have applied before. I submitted my CNL application online this morning and paid the $50 and now it seems like my application has slipped into a vortex that I don't have access to. When I log onto SURFS to check my status, the only option that it gives me is to submit a new application. Is there somewhere else on the website that I should be looking to confirm that my application has been submitted and is pending review or awaiting additional information (transcripts, recommendations, etc)? Perhaps there is a delay between when the application is submitted and when the status is visible?
Best of luck to all the other applicants...now the agonizing waiting game begins! Looking forward to giving each other support and encouragement on this thread.
Hi Grey Lady,
Who could not like you?! It's impossible!
In an attempt to stop feeling, completely helpless I'm looking ahead. In the event that I am accepted, is there anything I can be doing now to make my life easier in the time between finding out and starting class? I'm worried we're going to be crunched getting everything ready in time.
In the event that I'm not accepted for Spring 2010, is there an opportunity to review my application with "Admissions" to discuss areas where I may be lacking? (with the plan of applying for Fall 2010) Also, having completed all of the prerequisite coursework, is it better to enroll in another non-required course in order to avoid a break/lull in my transcript? I had heard once that it's better to apply while still enrolled as opposed to completing everything and taking a break. Not sure how that changes in the situation of not being accepted.
As always, thank you for your insight!

OK, referring to "getting ahead" I can think of a couple of things you can do ahead of time and actually they would probably apply to any nursing school. One is to start on your immunizations. This is the link to the UMB form you will need to complete to show you what you are going to need: http://www.umaryland.edu/health/medform.pdf
Also, you will need a current CPR, Professional Rescuer or Health care Provider - UMB only accepts these cards from American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Sign up for classes now because lots of them cancel if they don't get enough people. Early in the first semester you will have to take Medcalc exams (which you must pass to pass your Fundamentals class) and you can prepare for those on your own. Shady Grove will have tutoring available but this is stuff you can really teach yourself with the help of a book - pretty much any med calc book will do. Gotta go right now but I will be back soon with more.
More on getting ahead before nursing classes start:
Find your A & P and your statistics textbooks. You will want to be able to refer to them.
Do all sorts of personal shopping ahead - stock up on items you use regularly (shampoo, paper towels, pet food). Buy birthday, anniversary and other greeting cards in bulk. And stamps. If you have kids, stock up on birthday party gifts and hide them away, and talk to other moms about school supplies for projects to expect and buy now.
If your computer is on its way out or you don't have your own - get one and start getting used to it. A lot of students use laptops. Same thing for a printer.
Basically, understand that you will be devoting 60 hours a week to school and you won't be able to keep up with the house, pets, kids, and/or a spouse the way you used to. Do what you can to prepare them (and more importantly, yourself!) for this.
It will be the most exciting, rewarding, frightening, and grueling two years of your life. But, if this is truly your passion, it will all be so worth it.
Thanks so much Grey Lady! I feel much better already by having direction instead of just waiting. Will the Medical History Form and CPR certification be required by the first day of class or sooner? Also, a girlfriend of mine is starting at Georgetown in January (Nursing) and she is required to have H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccine. Does UMB/associated clinical sites have the same requirement? Thanks again for all that you do. Hope to see you soon

The Medical History form is due four weeks after you receive it in your packet (feel free to use the one on the website) and the CPR card is due by Orientation - we'd be happy to take it earlier. (Shady Grove students send there med history form and CPR to me.) Which reminds me - Orientation for the Shady Grove campus is Jan. 20 and 21 and in Baltimore it is Jan 13 and 14 or 14 and 15 - I forget exactly but it is the week before ours. The first day of class is Monday, Jan. 25. Right now a couple of our clinical sites require the seasonal flu and none have declared a H1N1 flu shot requirement, but that can change in a nanosecond.
WELL JIMMY CRICKETS.... I GOT IN!!!! How AWESOME.... See y'all at Baltimore in January Geez what a cliff hanger for the last two weeks... Thank God I was home from work for Ms. George to give me a call... packet in the mail!!!!:w00t:
OH YEAHHH Congrats RosesArePink - are you in the BSN or CNL? I am in the CNL - either way - will see you in January.
