UK nurse wishing to work in USA

Published

Hello all,

I am a registered nurse here in the UK, post completing Advanced diploma in Adult nursing. Knowing that I need to make up hours, my first biggest issue is finding a University that offers the `Nursing overseas programme' in the UK. I was wondering if anybody knew of any Universities in USA(preferrably MASS) that offer something similar. I would really appreciate ANY information on this.

Thanks

I don't know of any program in MA, there are public health programs that nurses attend, such as Harvard University, Tufts University, and Boston University. This would not make up any nursing hours though, but does review international health programs,

It looks like you would have to make up, Peds, OB, and possibly Psych which is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the US Associates Degree program, missing these areas, you would not be eligible for practical nursing either. If your goal is to move to the USA ( with a spouse due to retrogression), it maybe easier to see if you could get advanced placement in an Associate Degree Program which would take about 9 months.

Jobs are very difficult in the MA area and Boston Hospitals require a BSN, I don't know how your education would translate. Sorry for the bad news, I know you were looking for an easier answer.

It may be a case of approaching schools of nursing in the US and ask if you can be a guest student to make hours up. You may be able to shop around and find somewhere in the UK that may assist. With retrogression unless you have a spouse visa you are looking currently at a few years + waiting for a immigrant visa

Firstly, thank you to Medsurg and Silverdragon for your responses.

Medsurg, if I were to obtain an advanced placement in an Associates Degree Program to make up my hours (Peds, OB, and Psych ), does this mean I can only then take the NCLEX?

I guess what I am trying to find out is there any way possible I could graduate form a US University with an Associates Degree Qualification? I am contacting Universities at them moment, and awaiting responses.

Really appreciate your feedback.

Until your transcripts meet BON requirements you will not be able to sit NCLEX, once requirements are met and BON review transcripts will decision be made

Silverdragon have you a great answer have the BON evaluate your transcripts, ADN are granted via a college, state schools are long waiting lists. If you are interested which schools are available the state board of nursing.
