Not meant rudely , but it is simple ignorance ,that such a question as the OP posted was asked .
I came to the USA from the UK in 1988 , I was asked at that time , by a nurse , in all seriousness , if we had fridges in the UK .
Some americans have no interest in what is happening in their neighbouring state , so it is not surprising that they have no real world view , or concept of how people in other countries lead their lives .
