Hi everyone!
My name is Karyn and I am currently a CCU nurse in Chicago. Although I currently work ICU, I am an aspiring Midwife! I have applied to UIC for fall 2011. I was wondering if anybody here has attended UIC that did not have L&D experience prior to starting school. I could not find anywhere that they have a L&D requirement for the CNM program but I believe that have had that requirement in the past. Anybody know my chances?
Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!

Hi Karen,
I can't help you with info about UIC, but I'm a CCU stepdown nurse, with the same dream! Good Luck, hopefully someone here can answer.

I am a UIC grad but from the graduate entry program. Officially they require a year of relevant experience. This is pretty flexible and depending on the amount and type of experience many different things worked for my classmates: homebirth assistant, working in OB/GYN office, L&D, PP, volunteer work overseas, some doula experiences (although not exclusively I don't think since non-medical). So they are not married to L & D but do like to see some sort of dedication/interest in the field. It also helps to get some certs: fetal monitoring, etc. Good luck!
Just realized that I should add that when I was a student they required the one year of experience but I applied to the program more than 5 years ago so that may very well no longer be the case.

Why not do a doula certification, childbirth educator cert, or assist w/ homebirths? I remember how hard it was to get a L&D job, and 8 years ago was not nearly as tight as it seems to be now. But, there's more than one way over a mountain, right?
