Hello-
I will be doing my summer externship at UIC. And I was wondering about the parking. I'm pretty sure that I will have to pay. I was wondering if anybody knew if I would get some sort of discount and what the cost might be? I'm trying to figure out if taking the train will be cheaper.
Thanks!

Not to sound stupid, but what is a summer externship? However, from experience- taking the train is definitely cheaper (especially if summer externship students get the U-Pass).
A summer externship is an opportunity to gain nursing experience between your junior and senior year of nursing school.

You can park in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center Parking lot. It costs $2 a day no matter how long you park. I am fuzzy with the names of the streets but it is between Damen and Ogden and is one block south of the VA hospital. I know that's a terrible description but I think you should be able to google it and find it. It is about 4 blocks from the UIC hospital. You can also park for free if you leave the hospital's main entrance and walk south (sort of in between where the hospital is and where the clinics are). You cross the larger street (is it Roosevelt?) and about one block south is a large open grassy area with free parking all around. Many of the hospital employees park there. Now I am off to learn some street names;)
Thanks CEG!! I'm looking in to it.....

Please contact HR and/or UIC security for information on safe parking areas. Parking in the garage will be expensive, but far more safe than parking on the street, especially a few blocks away from the hospital. This neighborhood is not the best, and I would strongly discourage you from walking alone to and from a parking lot off campus.
That's a good point about the safety. I go to UIC and so have been at UIH quite a bit and go to class at UIC CON. I have evening classes and walk to the garage alone late evenings. I haven't had any issues so far but it is something to keep in mind. It is a pretty busy area though, and if you are working a shift there is usually a lot of traffic to and from the parking areas. You could call public safety and ask them what they think.

I parked on the lot just South of the DON. Cost is only $6.00, so that's not bad considering........
With what the CTA has done to the train system, I'd rather drive.

The juvenile lot is on Roosevelt and Odgen...with the entrance about 2 blocks east of Ogden. A shuttle bus runs all day until about 8pm I think...then picks up again @11pm until midnight. Stroger lot is $8.00 unless you can convince them you were a patient or visitor in which case it's $3.00.
