UIC Graduate Entry Program

Published

Hi folks,

Thinking about applying to UIC's GEP program. Anybody here applied and was accepted? What were your stats?

My stats: 3.2 Overall GPA/3.5 Sci BA in Sociology. Office Manager in home health care, tech in a medical equipment co, medical assistant (no cert) in dr's office and later office manager there. Volunteering in Nursing Home around 120 hours...

From what I can tell on their website, after completing the NCLEX, you immediately start the master portion of the program. Is this correct?

Steve--I was actually thinking the AGNP-Primary care specialty is most at risk considering a lot of FNP's work in primary care settings. Regardless, I agree, it makes it even more competitive for a lot of the other specialties that might not be AS competitive to begin with. I knew when I applied for FNP it was pretty much the most competitive, but I never envisioned this happening. It's unfortunate because everyone's admissions decisions are impacted by this change (even if it is only slight).

I applied FNP too. Extremely frustrated with that email.

Yea this is making me uneasy. All the specialities will have increased applicants now. You should call/email and ask if it is possible to submit a short supplemental essay explaining why you choose your second specialty?

ncami10,

I totally hear you. I harped on the fact in my essays that I deeply invested in caring for people across the lifespan. The thing is, although this whole thing irritates me, I have to give UIC a shot because its the last Master's NP program I'm applying to for this cycle (the other two are generalist-Rush and DePaul). I am thinking of picking Peds and there are totally things I would add to my application if I could. I like how many of us took months, perhaps even longer, to decide on our specialty and now we have one whole week to make a very serious decision.

Did you look at the school/FNP and occupational health/FNP specialties? I'm going to call because I want more info on them. I have no interest in occupational, but school nursing is mildly interesting to me. I just want to be sure that it's not limiting because I don't think there are near as many opportunities for school NP's out there that there are for FNP's.

Sittenfeld, you read my mind. I just called with no answer and I am emailing now. I'll call back later. I had too many questions for a voicemail.

If anyone else speaks to the college about the changes, please share your info!

Yea I asked that when I called, and they said that all the departments are aware that FNP is gone so they know FNP people will be applying to their specialty. Said FNP geared essays won't hurt you when we are in a new specialty but I don't see how that is possible. They said too many people in their masters program chose FNP so that's why there are no more spots for the GEP program.

Ireally do not understand how having an FNP geared essay won't affect us either. How are they going to ensure we are still a good fit for the specialty? And I think it isn't really fair to the applicants who already applied to those specialties to be compared to those of us who have different essays. I sent my email and hope to hear soon.

I also don't get though how they have room to offer school/FNP and occupational/FNP... I would think much of the course content would be the same. So why would they still be able to offer those?

I'm guessing this is going to push everything back even more considering they haven't even looked at any applications in all departments. . Didn't see this one coming lol. I will probably apply acute because I have the most volunteering experience there, but wanted FNP because of how broad it is.

Okay I know I shouldn't be doing this but I really need desperate help. I don't mean to take this very serious topic about FNP away from you guys.

I actually have a question about grades. So it's the 4th week of school now and it's too late to drop anything without not having it show on your transcript. I am taking organic chem (general) despite of me taking the upper level o chem earlier; don't ask me why. Anyways, it's too late to drop without a W (for withdrawal) show up in my transcript.

I really don't want to take this class anymore and I was wondering if a W would look bad on my transcript? I'm a really good student so this is my first W (and my last semester). Keep in mind the school will already accept me without seeing my grades and will require the last transcript to show that I have successfully completed my BS degree.

Any thoughts?

But even if too many Masters students chose FNP, for the first 15 months, we aren't taking any Masters classes (from my understanding)... If they wante to DECREASE the number of ppl admitted to FNP that would make more sense but to completely eliminate it??Even though my speciality isn't directly affected I'm feeling a very awkward vibe from UIC. Just isn't professional.

I don't think you should sweat it. After all, they won't see it until they accept you and organic (what a pesky little class!) isn't even required for admission. I'd say drop the class if you feel that strongly about it as long as it won't affect your overall graduation requirements.
